We need to talk about Nottingham Forest.

A nothing club? Give it up lid. Twice European Champions and Europa League qualifiers. No wonder they are signing better players.

We’re not a nothing club, although we’d all agree we’re a smaller club than Everton (who most of us have a lot of respect for btw). Good to be at least competitive again after a hopeless 25 years.

I give it a couple of seasons before the roof collapses in on this lot.

They have to be very close of falling foul to the rules surely? how has that nutter of an owner been able to spend money like this?

You’re probably right we’ll always be close to the limits as we still have a smallish ground.

So it all comes down to player trading. Made a profit last year and this summer we’ve sold Elanga, Danilo and others for a total of about £110m. Gibbs White and probably one other will likely go at the end of the season.

Good luck in the new ground this season. I went to Goodison many times and having seen the new place from outside it looks amazing.

Always kept an eye on Forest because of family connections. They're clearly going for it and if I'm honest Marinakis is the kind of chairman any ambitious club would want for his passion (saying nothing about his business and what goes in Greece etc) and his wealth, even if he's not PIF or American syndicate rich. Recent activity shows you have to take them very seriously now and IF (and there's lots of if's) he doesn't walk away they maintain Nuno+ level managers and they also get the ground sorted (what's it been now 5 years in the planning?) and have a good year then they could become a regular top 6 club.

They are close to hitting their ceiling. I think their chairman is determined to have them regularly competing for the champions league but that is impossible. The top six clubs wage bills are almost double that of Forest turnover. These clubs are always able to keep ahead. It looks like with the money Forest has spent they are going to need to be getting much more income per year to maintain this and build on it. when they dont achieve europe yearly, they are going to be forced to sell to balance the books. So many clubs, ourselves included, have tried this and come unstuck. forest are building a team that can challenge for the top ten regularly but that will not be enough. The chairmans expectancy will be the ultimate de-stabilising factor

I hope they get knocked out in the group stage and then get relegated.

Circumstances have helped them every step of the way and a Chris wood. Lenient masters point deduction and then getting Europe over a team that completely deserved it more.

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo on relationship with Evangelos Marinakis: "I always had a very good relationship with the owner, last season we were very close and spoke on a daily basis.

"This season it is not so well [between us] but I always believe that dialogue is important because my concern is the squad and the season we have ahead of us. Our relationship has changed and we are not as close."

When asked if it was good his relationship with Evangelos Marinakis had changed, Nuno said: "No, it is not good. I think everybody at the club should be together but this not the reality."

Nuno Espirito Santo on why his relationship with the owner has changed: "I don't know exactly but I'm being honest with you, it is not the same. The reason behind it I do not know. What I said last week or two weeks ago was my concern and why I was worried about where we were going [as a club]."

More from Nuno on Marinakis: "What I said, I said it with respect. The reality is that the relationship is not what is use to be. It was a respectful relationship based on trust and sharing opinions but now it is not so good."
