Player Valuation: £50m
I dont see how a player or two plucked from the youth system equates to train set stuff. It was us fans that bought into the Wayne myth, and it has destroyed Anichebe, and nearly Rodwell, and Coleman suddenly isnt all that. The fans allowed themselves to be dictated to by the media about 'once in a lifetime' type players, and it was another rod to beat the club with. But with that beating of the club it meant a slow and steady rotting of the faith and belief in other players coming through.
The benchmark had been set.
Hence the thread title.
Don't see your point at all.
Anichebe is poor/average depending on your own critical tastes.
Rodwell has gone nowhere for three years.
Coleman was plucked from the Irish leagues and isn't homegrown.
None of these were ever touted as the next Rooney.
Just because a decent young prospect comes from the ranks does not automatically mean he will be as good as Rooney. I've never heard any Evertonian compare Anichebe or Coleman to Rooney. Rodwell has had a bit of media hype around him, but he has not fulfilled his potential.
These players not succeeding is not a result of Evertonians putting unfair pressure on them, or buying into any myths.
Rooney was an exceptional talent, but he was sold as an asset, we got a decent price for him considering his age and experience at the time, and in truth, this all happened 8 years ago and very few even care nowadays. Last time he played at Goodison, he was hardly even booed.
