Was Andy Townsend really that bad a commentator ?

A good Co -commentator needs to have a distinctive voice. Andy Gray and Big Ron had that and that's why they're the best I've heard in my life time.

He's absolutely TERRIBLE. I would love to become a commentator and I'm sure I could keep the fans listening and entertained through England games. He's one of those "a few feet to the left and the keeper to miss it and you've got a goal there" kind of commentators.

Tyldesley, Drury and Townsend are all equally appaling.

Worst for me at the moment is Motty. Once an icon of football commentating, his old-school manners really grate on me. Particularly where it is clear as day on first viewing that there's a blatant handball, clear offside or an excellent save from the keeper, and only on the 3rd replay will Motty pipe up 'oh, and I think, maybe, perhaps, looks like he might be slightly offside there', or 'oh I'm not sure but I think the keeper might have got a touch on that'. Yes you senile old fool, we all saw it clear as day the first time.

His constant bone sucking of Jack Wilshere is what made me dislike him, always talking about him being world class yet done nothing of any note except for the team goal vs Norwich.
