Leagues with video review are always going to err on the side of letting play continue. The NFL does that with debatable catches, fumbles, etc. It’s easier to nullify a play that already happened than to explain why you blew the whistle early and stopped a key moment with a bad call.

I understand that. However, those plays have happened and are done with. It's not exactly comparable to letting 50/50 balls go when someone is clearly offside.

I'm not saying that is what is happening in Europe, only what I've noticed in the MLS when I watch it. It's rather annoying. I'm also not really a fan of reviews. To me, it's just a game and bad calls and dealing with that is just part of it. I get people wanting to make sure the correct call happens, especially the people whose livelihood depends on it.

As a fan, I've lived through 30 years of bad calls and survived it. So at this point, I just accept bad calls. Fans can get over it.

Nothing is more important than fan's happiness. Without fans and their emotion football would be a game in the same vein of hopscotch or conkers.

There is only "something" on the line i.e. money because it's the fans who put it into the game.

I refer to fans happiness cos the wolves manager did... saying they want to celebrate. If I want to talk fans happiness then fact is there are two sets of fans.. So if VAR overturns a goal then the other fans will be happy right? And the fans disallowed unhappy.. although in the cold light of day they have to accept it knowing the right decision was made.

Imagine being the fans that have an unfair goal scored against you and means you lose out on 4th as a result.. and we have the tech to ensure that didn’t happen. How “happy” will those fans be.. ?

Those fans should get over it. I don't necessarily agree with the wolves manager, but after dealing with reviews in American sports for two decades. I do appreciate the point. I thought his point was dumb for criticizing opposing fans for cheering a disallowed goal.

Sports fandom is a zero sum game. One's happiness will be the others disappointment. The larger issue is people not being able to handle something like a bad call in proper context.

Get over it. Some idiots in the states filed a class action lawsuit against the NFL because of a missed call. They come across as absolutely horrible people.

It's a dumb game, get a grip. It's entertainment.

The issue was that rightly or wrong people perceived that decisions would go in favour of certain clubs because of their reputation.

Arguably, VAR should help eliminate those imbalances by creating an objective level-playing field, but whether it will is still up for debate.

There’s already been a fair few inconsistencies in VAR decisions and some of the rules are, well questionable, so hopefully they’re ironed out.

We should all try and not be cynical but it’s difficult when some of the decisions are just baffling and others seem to not face sanctions.

But back to your initial point, I was always a fan of the spontaneity of the game - good and bad decisions all judged in the moment.

However, the days of good and bad calls went out the window when games became scrutinised by multiple cameras and in slow motion.

I think a huge problem is that they’ve tried to be massively proactive and guess what scenarios are going to cause bother and then made up some poorly thought out rules and just vomited them down onto paper. These strange handball/phases of play/offside but not interfering with play despite interfering with play rules need sorting.

Boiled Egg-headed Gammon-faced yokel Ian Holloway blames the EU for British Refs being forced to use VAR to spot Handballs.
“I hope we get out, Brexit, because that's what people are voting for and sorting that out because you cannot have someone telling us how to do our own game.”

This little Ingerlanger arse needs cancelling pronto.

Nailed on to run for UKIP at the next GE

Prob already discussed but they should use the NFL model. Each manager gets three chances to challenge the refs decision via VAR, if VAR goes with the refs decision they lose one sub.
VAR is not used unless there’s a challenge
NFL model checks every score tho, regardless. And every turnover as well.

The NFL model doesn't really translate to football so I don't get why at the World Cup they thought having the ref run to a screen was a good plan but at least at the end the NFL ref has to explain what they decided. You don't have to agree but at least you know.

Yea, I was more thinking of taking just the 'challenge' idea from NFL.
Make it a risk to use a challenge and maybe it will cut down on the use of VAR. Also if the ref makes a crappy decision and you've used all your challenges, it's down to your poor game management.

I'm not a fan of over using VAR, only for very obvious errors. The Ashes test series has shown how video technology can help, as the umpires have been awful, but it hasn't impacted the matches
