A teacher of mine at high school once gave an entire lesson explaining how he spent his weekends doing grave rubbings.
Most times it seemed the cemetery were fine with it, but some would say no. Where they said no, he would drive to a secluded spot nearby, around dusk and sneak in with his paper and crayons to rub some graves.
Seemed unusual at the time. Still does.
One of my old bosses was part a group, that researched and found World War 2 aircraft, that had been shot down / crashed in battle abroad and their crews had never been found or recovered.
He used all of his holidays and even took unpaid time off, if the group thought they were close to finding an aircraft and needed a full compliment.
Prior to me leaving, they`d found and excavated two allied aircraft in Belgium ( I think ) and with the authorities, their crews had been recovered and repatriated.
He used to take a lot of stick about being an anorak from the lads, but looking back now it`s a pretty cool thing to do and I`m sure the families of the airmen were eternally grateful for them finding and help give them a proper burial after all that time.
