House of Correction
This has probably been mentioned already hundreds of times, but not that I've noticed.

All this doom and gloom about Portsmouth catching us in 5th is irrelevant when they win the FA cup in a few weeks, as 6th will qualify.

This is correct isn't it?

If not, feel free to call me a silly bugger.

Some other good news, I just qualified for the WSOP main event in Vegas.* :D

* possibly only TX Bill will know what I'm on about.

That's true, at least I think so. An it is also the case, I believe, that even if we finished 7th we'd qualify via the Fair Play League. I might be wrong on that, though.

Either way, we should still be in Europe next season. One thing, though, we need to strengthen and £25 million to do so, would not be too much.

In fact even if Cardiff win they may not be allowed into europe (for being too welsh) so it could be down to 6th regardless of who wins.

That sounds silly. Yet, I know it is closer to the truth than most will think. Being too welsh is a uefa thing. strange but true.

IF we finish lower than 6th we do not deserve to qualify if we cant go through the front door I dont want a backdoor entry sorry we are Everton and have standards(y)

Very nice on the qualification. Be sure to wear an Everton shirt so if by chance you're on the telly, I'll know it's you.

i'm extremely confused about this whole thing, and would appreciate a thorough breakdown. generally, when the FA cup winner has already qualified for europe, the european spot goes to the runner up right (i think thats how west ham qualified a few years ago)? So if portsmouth win, and they finish in 5th, then the spot would go to cardiff? The issue people are bringing up now though, is that because cardiff are welsh they shouldn't tie up a an english european spot or something (as i understand it), so if portsmouth win, cardiff qualify and it would go to the next league spot (presumably us).

if the above is true, then wouldn't the same hold for a cardiff win. if cardiff did win, they'd still go to europe without taking an english spot, meaning portsmouth would get the runner up spot for england, and we'd take the next league place.

i may have this completely wrong, but as long as everton and portsmouth finish 5th and 6th, regardless of who finishes ahead of whom, aren't cardiff everton and portsmouth all going to europe?

the f.a. cup is the english f.a. cup and so one of the places from the english allocation is given to the winner/ runner up(if winner is in champions league), it is not possible for a welsh team to represent england in europe. if they wish to gain entry to europe they must go in the welsh cup, newport county got quite far in cup winners cup quarter final in1980.
swansea finished 6th in 1980 which may have got them a uefa placebut went into c.w.c. as they won welsh cup, c.w.c. being higher rated of the 2 comps.
also... i bet gobby fowler would love to score the winner to keep us out of europe, but it will no doubt be the other nemesis j.f.h.

Cardiff play in the english laegues as "guests " of the FA and as such if they win the FA cup they wont be entered into the UEFA cup by the FA.

Platini has said if this was the case they would maybe allow Cardiff a woldcrad entry to the UEFA cup so i would assume that regardless of where we finish (5th or 6th) we should be in europe next season.

if cardiff are skipped over, why does it matter?
then doesn't that mean that portsmouth are automatically in europe already.
i was under the impression that if the FA cup winner was for any reason not going to be given that spot, it'd go to the runner up. since cardiff can't represent england, wouldn't it go to portsmouth, and if portsmouth finish 5th, the 6th league place?

likewise if portsmouth win and finish 5th, wouldn't it skip over cardiff and go to us.

i don't see how the winner of the FA cup has any relevance of europe, i'm sure i'm missing something big but i just don't get it?

Yes, Pompey have qualifed for the UEFA Cup. Cardiff cannot obtain one of the UEFA Cup spots assigned to England because they are Welsh. In the case that they do win, Pompey will get the UEFA Cup spot as runners-up and Cardiff will get a wildcard spot.

So, out of the 3 UEFA Cup spots assigned to England, one has gone to Spurs for winning the League Cup, one has gone to Pompey for being the only English side in the final, and there is one left in the league to contest.

The only way we wouldn't automatically qualify for Europe is if Villa catch up with us. Pompey are a non-factor in the race for the last spot.

So, the only threat to our automatic UEFA Cup spot would be Villa.

Watch it mate Ive got a welsh grandad

also a Irish mother in law and a gran from Blackburn feel free to attack any one else except of course our fat club(Monty and Me):lol::lol::lol::lol:

Apparently I get my dark, Mediterranean look from my Welsh great granddad

(He got it from his shipwrecked Spanish Armada descendents)

I'd rather not go to UEFA cup on a technicality (Cardiff being Welsh) than at all. I wouldn't put all my hopes on just Pompey winning the FA cup though. Villa is rested (No Europe, early cup exits) and Cardiff has pulled some sweet goals out of their ass in their FA cup run.
