Everton, along with Aston Villa and Fulham, will be England's representatives in the Europa League next season.
Despite the Toffees beating Fulham on the last day of the Premier League season, the London side still finished seventh and secured the final European spot.
The Europa League is the revamped version of the Uefa Cup, which was won in its final season by Ukrainians Shakhtar Donetsk.
Next term, Everton will play one two-legged play-off as they attempt to qualify for the new group stage, which features four teams per group, instead of five teams which had previously been the case.
Those play-off games are scheduled by Uefa for 20 and 27 August 2009.
In the group stage, as in the Champions League, teams play each other home and away with the top two teams in each group qualifying for the last 32.
From that point onwards, the competition is a two-legged knockout competition.
The final takes place in Hamburg in May 2010.

I was led to believe from members on here that finishing 5th meant straight into the group stages?

FFS, I thought fifth would mean we go into the group draw automatically with this new cup.

edit. Sorry thats exactly what you said. Read the article and that was my first reaction without seeing the comment at the bottom

This Europa League is a bit of a farce.

They claimed to model the new layout on the Champions League. If thats the case, there should be some benefit to the higher finishing side, as there is with the Champions League.

In the group stage, as in the Champions League, teams play each other home and away with the top two teams in each group qualifying for the last 32.

So after the group stages your in the last 32

To gain any credibility it should equal the Champions League and from the group stages it should be the last 16, rather than having Champions League rejects enter it.

Given the amount of games, its not really worth it.

There better be seeding!

Id rather be in it then not, i am also half hopefull that the collective bargaining to be disclosed may see us with some increased wonga!

the was a league money table somewhere on the net this week, and the teams who were in the uefa.... the most an english side made was 400k.

how is that possible when arsenal made 20 million from their champs league run?

ok i know it's possible, but the uefa is nothing but an 'anglo italian cup' money wise.

it really is top 4 or bust.

Theres a new deal being negotiated now mate for the Europa Leauge its based on the same system as the CL (collective bargaining) the hope is it will mean more wonga for clubs in the Europa League. You can take it as a given it wont get close to the CL, but hopefully it will be an improvement on what team currently get.

By finishing 5:th we got to skip the last qualification stage that Fulham has to get through just to reach the first round.

We are seeded in the first round, but we can face teams like: Toulouse, Trabzonspor, Red Star Belgrade.. neither sounds like fun and easy opponents, but we should beat them if we play like we can play.

But theres no advantage to finishing 5th rather than 6th?
According to the list I'm looking at.. then no. I thought it would be, but apparently it isn't. Must be something like the Champions League where the first placed teams goes into the groupstage and the 4:th placed team need to qualify.

We are ranked 14:th-19:th in the competition, if all favourites win their qualification games and their first round legs, we will be in the 2:nd ranked pool in the group stage.

Just like theres no advantage to finishing 1st rather than 2nd in terms of CL qualification

Aye, but usually 7th wouldn't result in Europa League qualification, would it?

What would be the case if only 5th and 6th qualified for the Europa League? Am I right in assuming there would be an advantage to finishing 5th rather than 6th if we hadn't reached the FA Cup Final? - If thats the case, it seems we have done both Villa and Fulham a favour.
