TV Series

My Grandad and 3 Aunties lived in the street next to Garrick st. till 1971 (as did I until I was 3), so I have lots of happy memories and it's sad to see the state it's in now.I think my Aunties sold up as it was rumoured the Council were going to compulsory purchase a lot of the area as it was on the original route of the M62 in to town.

I worked around there from the late 80`s, it went downhill rapidly with the advent of smack and crack, which was a tragedy for the majority of decent people who lived in the area.

It became that bad, that certain streets, where taken off the " Student Approved Living Scheme " for rental properties.

Top of the Lake.

just watched 1st series & about to start on the 2nd.

bit dark & every twist imaginable tbh.

Awaiting Aussies to say it's a perfect portrayal of NZ.

Made by the BBC based over there (uktv/sundance) & in Sydney where 2nd series is set

Just started on series 3 of Gomorrah.

I`m limiting myself to two episodes a day, to stop it getting silly.

" I`ll just watch one more and then I`ll go to sleep and then another and then another lol"

Watched it the other day for about 20 minutes, hadn’t even realised there was no subtitles as the action was so good. Definitely up there with the wire and the sopranos imo.

That's some testimonial comparing it to those two series.
If it's that good I may have to give it a whirl. I've recorded the latest series at the very least.

It’s better than The Sopranos imo and I loved The Sopranos. It’s kinda the polar opposite of it though, no cheesy characters or cliche mafia stereotypes that you see in American mafia flicks etc... it’s just raw, incredibly realistic and as brutal as anything I’ve ever seen. It looks a million dollars as well and rivals any modern US series in terms of production quality. I know a couple of people who couldn’t stomach it though, they just found it far too bleak. There’s no good guys or heroes, only sociopaths who make Tony Soprano look like a care bear.

Is it better than The Wire ? This is something I’ve mulled over a lot and I’m going to have to say at this moment in time... not quite, but if it maintains the quality of the first three seasons it’s going to come very close.

For me it’s the second greatest show ever with potential to perhaps become the best depending on where it goes from season 4 onwards.

Really ? Thought it was absolute premium grade tosh with some of the hammiest acting I’ve ever seen in a big budget series. Bad characters, Bad acting, Bad script.

You watched till the end?

Gomorrah makes the sopranos look like a comedy.

Personally feel that its on another level to The Wire...in every single way.

Best series ever made...

Thing is in our house the bride can't read subtitles quick enough so as a consequence we tend not to watch stuff like that. I'll deffo start watching on account of what you said

The bleakness is what I love about it.

Not one person in it, has any redeeming qualities at all.

It doesn`t try to dress them up as anything other than they are - murderous pyschos, who kill women, children, their own family / wives, as willingly as they kill their rivals.

The single word - Gomorrah, couldn`t sum the series up any better.

It doesn`t do the city of Naples any favours either.

It`s simply brilliant, especially when you think that this genre has been done to death.

Nope, would not be taking the missus for a mini break there.
