TV blackout if match tickets are not sold out

OK, it's not football but.....

I've just seen on the news here in Illinois that if the remaining 7,500 tickets for the Green Bay Packers NFL playoff game against the SF 49ers are not sold today, then the game will be blacked out on TV in the Green Bay area. This stadium holds 73k, so they have already sold over 65k tickets!!! I think this is a bit of a disgrace, actually. Strong-arming the fans to "buy tickets or else" is terrible treatment of fans, especially just over xmas when many people are skint.

Can you imagine what would happen if clubs tried to do that....although maybe a blackout in Norway would be amusing ;-)

Lambeau Field holds more than 80,000 though

In which case, they have sold 72,500k

I had no idea it was NFL policy to blackout games that are not sold out.

This is also crazy...."The last time a Packers home game wasn't sold out was in January 1983 when the Packers hosted a playoff game against the St. Louis Cardinals during a strike-shortened season"

AND the tickets remaining are over $100.

And I know this is not football, but, imagine if the FA tried to implement it

Supposedly an amazingly supported team can't fill their stadium for a playoff game. I'd stop the whole State of supposed fans from watching it on TV.

The Green Bay and Milwaukee TV markets would get blacked out, the rest of the state (which, in reality, is probably less than half of the total population) would still be able to see it. Love that we're still considered a "home market" in Milwaukee when they haven't played a game here since '94.

In defense of the fence sitters, it's going to be a massive blowout and an arsefreezeapalooza.

I can understand it. It's not really right if the ground isn't full yet everyone is watching it on TV. Tickets for sporting events are usually cheaper in the States, aren't they?

I'd always wondered why in this country we don't televise all of the PL games. But if we did then the gates would surely suffer, which would create a very sterile atmosphere.

They only black it out in the home TV markets. If you're in San Francisco, you'll still be able to watch the game. It's still asinine, especially since many teams (including the Packers) play in taxpayer-supported stadiums.

The cheapest ticket for this game is $102 USD mate. NFL tickets are VERY expensive.

MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS are all pretty reasonably priced though.

Remember years ago when City and Merseyside could only broadcast home games if they were sold out.

Serious questions though mate, if it's the play offs why is it not sold out and would they normally sell out? Would of thought the revenue of letting them screen the game would make up for the empty seats?

Nope:
Chicago Bears regular season prices $104-$420 for a single game
Chicago Bulls: $40 - $2500 for a single game

Baseball might be cheaper.
College games may also be cheaper but I flatly refuse to pay to watch undergraduates play sport - even thought the Illinois stadium is 2 miles from my house

Also the 49ers will blow them out.
