It's supposed to be secular but Erdogan is pushing a more Islamic agenda hence the army stepping in tonight. If they don't pull it off then who knows what's to come.

For a long time Turkey has been a secular state and it's been considered the armys duty to keep it that way. Erdogan is getting more and more oppressive and accomodating towards hardline Islamists. Such as dealing with ISIS, shooting down that Russian jet and so forth.
However he enjoys a lot of support outside of the metropolitan bubbles of Istanbul and Ankara so it's anybodies guess how this will play out.

The army have got fed up with the President and taken over. The President, who's buggered off, has told the people to take to the streets. It'll be over by tomorrow or the day after.........
