he's been told he would have been 4th choice striker, and burnley and leeds both offered better terms

Why would he be "4th choice" rather than being loaned out again? Finding this explanation a little too hard to believe.
 
Is there anything to the apparent "unhappiness"? There's been far too much written about it now over a prolonged period of time for there not to be any smoke without fire.

Only Martinez and the club will know the true story, but if it's true and he wants out then as good a player as he is, get the best deal possible and move him on.

He joined Wigan when he was 20, you need to be trained in England for 3 years before the age of 21 to be classed as homegrown. This is why the likes of Gael Clichy and Fabregas are classed as "home grown", and McCarthy isn't
