There's 2 things I don't get

One, why would Spurs offer a 5 year contract in this scenario. That seems like total desperation

And why would De Zerbi want the job right now? The team are in free fall and its not going to be easy. I still think they are more likely to stay up than go down. But if you are the manager who takes spurs down, then people will always blame you for it even though its been 3 or 4 years in the making.

I'm not even sure De Zerbi is that good a manager either. He did OK at Brighton but nothing fantastic. He also doesn't stay at any club for very long.

Why wouldn't De Zerbi want it ? He'd be mad not too. A 5 year deal on mega bucks, that he'll probably get the end of the season if he takes Spurs down. He will get no blame," not his team," already down", "done his best" and "not enough time". Moves on and gets another top job. If he keeps Spurs up, hailed as "a miracle worker", probably a massive staying up bonus, massive transfer war chest, no Europe just concentrate on cup competition and try to qualify for Europe. It really is a no lose scenario there, he doesn't have to be great following the last saps.

spurs aren't daft*, there's no way they leave themselves on the line with a five year contract being paid up after 7 weeks of failed end of season.
This'll be part of why they're struggling to get someone in, and part could explain jumping for Tudor.
They've backed themselves into a corner though, and with the sands of time slipping by the more their hand is forced.

I expect Everton have learned after the martinez robbery that contract stipulations need to cover every possibility. (how he was allowed to swan off for an international contract whilst having his club contract with us paid in full being a significant kick in the balls).

Spurs want to survive and only reward the person that delivers that so far, but it's a lot of reputation to put on the line for very little reward for whoever accepts that deal.

They've let to many players turn on the respective managers of the time and continue failing to turn up with the goods on match days. It's an apathy that has spread through the whole rotten mess. It's in the couldn't care less stands, it's in the downed tools players, it's in the feckless board, and the endless line of clown managers is the icing on the cake.

To many ideals (and idealism) and not enough nuts and bolts football.
