Its not that pretty or that organised but its got so much life about it I loved it - I was based in Toledo at the time and Chicago was a wonderful escape! Its also the city where I've been both the hottest (was there during the 1995 heatwave) and coldest so that tends to stick in the mind.In alphabetical order!
Also it's fascinating to me so many people here rate Chicago... I actually think it's kind of gash for a city of its size. To me, it's just that giant, inept city about 90 miles to the south that I make fun of.

You are right though, sometimes it takes a little bit of distance to make you appreciate things - I live less than 4 hours from Yosemite and haven't visited in 5 years yet went a couple of times when lived in UK....yet have seen more of UK sights since I left than I did when I lived there.
