Tony Hibbert's the best center back in the world! (well the emergancy one anyway)

People sometimes forget that for our defenders to be under pressure means our midfield and fowards have lost the ball, and been played through instead of stopping the attack.
If we had 2 good defensive midfielders, and I'm not sure who is our best, then much of the threat would be diminished before it ever got to our back line, and especially just oitside the penalty area, where we are put under pressure constantly by good opposition.
I'd much rather have a good defender, than an attacking right back, and Hibbert is a good defender.
Yes, he gets caught occasionally, but so do our other options in his position, and Baines is caught just as much.
I often feel Hibbert gets unfair critisism.

Not many people have a problem with Hibberts defending, but it starts to get a bit tiresome when every single cross he does ends up going for a throw in or a goal kick. I can count on 1 finger the amount of good crosses he has done.

He's good when he's up against someone like Downing or Petrov, a left footed winger who will just knock the ball down the line and try to outpace him. Hibbert has enough agility to turn, keep up with them and get a tackle in. To be fair to him, he is a very good tackler. Strong, committed and usually times them well.
But against wingers who vary there game he is sadly lacking, wingers with a bit of skill who just don't head towards the byline. He can't handle wingers who cut inside, he hasn't got a clue what to do. They pull him out of position and he struggles.
He's far from the perfect defender and his ability as a footballer is limited, big time. He won't use his left foot, he offers no link up going forward and he doesn't have the pace to create space for his winger.
He's useful backup but if we want to progress then that's what he needs to be, a squad player, possibly even a third choice right back. If we have players available in his position then he shouldn't be playing in my opinion, he's just the not the answer and he's proven it so many times.

Gosling, Osman, Cahill when in that position, to name but 3, who rarely beat their man, nor get a useful cross in.
VDM was our last true winger.
Gosling is 19, Osman is not very good and you just had to put Cahill in didnt you. Tim Cahill, the player known through out the World as a Winger.

Sorry guys but apart from the fact that he's a local lad and he killed defoe with that tackle on sunday i have very little sympathy for hibbert

Stephen Pienaar, Mikel Arteta, Billy have all recently played infront of Hibbert. Arteta and Pienaar have lots of assists to their names as does Billy.
But your missing the point, nobody is saying Hibbert should be sold. As TxB said hes a good player to have in the squad, he would provide decent back up, but if we as a Club want to advance, it cant be done with players as limited as Tony Hibbert and Leon Osman, who most would agree have been the weak links in our team for a number of seasons.
