Not sure what you mean by defensive mid. Soucek can be that. When Rice decided that he wanted to be an 8, Soucek was the most defensive midfielder for Moyes' West Ham team. He has played more and better as a 6 than any of our current midfielders.

I was about to reply and enter into reasoned debate about the pros and cons of signing Soucek.
But then you come out with this.
Clearly you are just as biased in his favour as I am against .
There is no middle ground to be found .
And I have watched him play , he is a solid , bang average PL player , when is on top of his game .
He isn’t particularly mobile , his distribution is unexceptional/ poor.
He is decent , but not worth a 2/3 year contract at the wage he is currently on .
