2017/18 Tom Davies

I only manage to travel up for around 6 or 7 home matches a year and maybe 4 or 5 away, and I have to say whenever I watch young Tom I always think what a brilliant prospect he is.

I simply can’t see how people on here are so critical of him. That said mind, I came on to look at the reviews of the Stoke game, hoping to read something positive....however, a couple of extracts reminded me why Everton players should never read forums.

“Davies was crap”. Pickford is over rated”. Baines should go at the end of the season”. Jagielka simply can’t have another season”. Walcott was poor”. “Gana’s passing was terrible “.

Half the team with negative comments, and we won!!

Average pass accuracy
TD 80%
Besic 96%
Gana 85%

Stats that mean nothing without context. Jordan Henderson has a higher accuracy with a longer average distance than Kevin De Bruyne and Leroy Sane over many more games and minutes of comparable football.

96% is an average of Besic's stats over the total of the 2 Prem appearances he made for Everton this season. One of those appearances was 5 minutes against Citeh where he attempted 0 passes.

The only real contribution is the 2-0 defeat against Chelsea. His pass percentage against Chelsea is where the 96% comes in and they were pretty much all backwards or sideways passes. The two notable exceptions are a long ball played forward from the Everton box that went into touch and a very short forward pass which Squawka defines as a key pass which I assume led to a chance for Everton.

Davies range of passing in the same game featured more forward passes - not surprisingly this was where the majority of his failed passes came. This could be indicative of poor decision making on Davies behalf, poor running off the ball or simply a reflection of the fact that attacking passes are often harder to pull off. He is also one of the few players we have who is willing to turn on the ball and look to go forward with it.

Davies has not had a good season but then neither have the senior players around him. He came into the team last year with no pressure or expectation and impressed. But he is now in a situation where people are looking for him to have great games and moan at him for making mistakes in one of the toughest leagues in the world. It's utterly bizarre.

I hate the haters too. But we beat a 10 man Stoke 2-1. That's nothing to get excited about.

I think a lot of it is uncertainty about which role he's supposed to play, and my guess is Allardyce doesn't have a scooby do as to what his best role is.

This
The lad has a lot of good stuff in his locker
Passion aggression , willingness to carry the ball , decent control , good passing etc
As was said earlier
Only problem is he’s not as good defensively ( yet ) as Gana.
He’s not a No 8 and he’s not a No 10 so where do we play him to make the most of his talents.
In my opinion he needs a good manager to decide his best position and a good coach to show him how to maximise his talents in that position.
Unfortunately Everton don’t have such a Manager or coach at present

Very true Papa. I suppose all these years of awful football has finally taken it's toll. I'm now driven by poor results to facilitate a managers demise.

I get slated for suggesting that people were happy for us to lose so the manager was sacked when Martinez was here! Its gone proper full circle lately!

Sammy Lee is supposed to be a very good coach isn't he? And he played in that position quite successfully...

He is 19 and getting by in the top flight. I think he is being managed perfectly fine.

I don't think Tom is crap, I actually really rate the kid, but it's clear that he's a bit all over the place the moment. Can't nail down a preferred position and is generally erratic in his play.

I'm more than willing to write his season off and start again in the summer. He needs a good rest and to come back full of fire and ready to kick on, otherwise he'll just continue to regress. I really hope he makes it, but it's up to him.
