Tom "can't pass" Davies 32 passes at 78% accuracy per 90
Ross "gives the ball away" Barkley 50 passes at 83% accuracy per 90
Glyfi "best player at the club, passes like a superstar" Sigurdsson 24 passes at 76% accuracy per 90

We do love to critisise our own and overpraise signings.

Not really helpful considering we don't know what type of passes those were. Hendo has class passing stats but still wouldn't want him ahead of any of those 3.

These statistics in regard to passing are not the be all and end all of assessing how good a passer of the ball a player is. I have an intense dislike to over reliance on stats, it creates a stat driven mentality. If a player gets it into his head that every time he gives the ball away it is a mark against him then he is always going to go for the safe option. Surely we, under Martinez, have seen enough of a strategy based on ball retention. Don't get me wrong, I am not advocate giving the ball away but we need a culture where a player isn't afraid to lift his head and try an adventurous pass. Hopefully with Silva talking about a high lions and high intensity we can get the ball back when a move breaks down. I am happy to see players trying to expose the opposition with risky passing provided the team can cope with not having the ball or being able to go and get it back again

Proper stats take all that into account. See this piece on Glyfi vs Ross before we signed him

Siggy is well below average at tricky passes.

I was just using the basic stats available to show that we seem happier to give slack to £45m 28 year olds but not 19 year old youth products.

I know he's only young but I'm not sure what his best position is. What type of midfielder is he? He reminds me of Modric but lacks the vision and guile to emulate him.

Last season didn’t count for anyone. This team was an absolute shambles with Koeman and became even an absoluter shambles once Allardyce started opening his mouth.

Not sure about that mate, it shouldnt count for anyone, I agree on that but look at some of the nonsense in the Siggy thread and to some it does

Wanted him to be a success, but he can’t pass, has got no pace, no vision, he’s got no strength on the ball and can’t shoot. He’s just a bit of a nuisance sometimes to opposing players like Robbie savage was. A season or 2 on loan might help but even then can’t see him being more than a John ebbrell type player.

I’m sure both you guys are the very epitome of fashion.

That is correct

I want both to be given a chance in a team that is functioning. I may be misguided or
looking at the world through blue tinted glasses but I think most of our players will be approaching this season with a different mindset. I am hoping that with a plan in place and some organisation the players will know their roles and will commit to them.

"Proper stats"? That analysis isn't "proper stats". Look, you can use stats all you want, but if you don't even understand how to use them, you shouldn't. That analysis did absolutely NOTHING to show isn't well below average at anything. That analysis just showed that Barkley had the ball more and did less with it.

Of course they will. And we can all see the positives and negatives of many of our players. Davies amongst others (Rooney for example) gave the ball away a ton last season. But there was no emphasis on possession, nor were there players with much movement or activity out there.

Silva will play differently, although for the love of me, I'm not sure how on earth we are going to pass out of the back with our center CB cadre. Davies can be a part of that and a better manager with have them better understand how and where to attack. Davies you'd think could improve massively as a result. I could actually see him fitting in great in Silva's 4-3-3 or his 4-2-3-1 at many positions.
