Indeed, it's often just a matter of opportunity. I was a better footballer than Ball back in the day. Only difference was I grew up on a concil estate, my ma and da were skint, and I was more interested in sagging than taking my PE lessons.

Not surprising really. PE used to consist of, err, baseball, rugby and cross country, with the occasional footy thrown in. Not to mention that one of the PE teachers was a 6' 4" ex rugby player who seemed to thrive on slamming into little weeds like me.

F off mr teacher, ya bellend, this is Liverpool. We don't want to play rugby, and don't get me started on baseball.....

Anyway, I digress, you can probably tell I'm half way through a bottle of scotch....
Is right lid, no regrets at all I can tell.

I have had two offers to play rugby in the past few weeks but think I'm gonna swerve it as it probably would hurt now.

Hahaha, I've only got regrets for quitting boxing at the age of 16. I've sparred with Lonsdale belt winners and left them on their arse.

No excuses though, I'm just an effing loser :P

Yeah mate, that head of yours (I've never actually seen it) would struggle to get into a scrum. :P

Who needs transfer funds when we have an endless supply of young talent? It's like The Magic Pudding (obscure Oz reference).

Only ever watched him once and that was against the Tranmere first team in pre season, he was our best player that day. Was also impressed how he did equally well behind the striker as he did in front of the back four.

Tom is an interesting one. Before I get start I should say plucking youngstars out from training with England is not unusual. They obviously need the numbers. It is still a good achievement for Davies as the under 17's coach will have suggested him when asked but it's nowhere near a full call up!

Davies was captain of our all conquering under 15/16's side. A team that contained capped internationals at youth levels such as Dowell, Connolly, Yates, Holland, Brewster & Walsh. There was also Donuhue who played well above his age sometimes even for the reserves.

Compared to some of the above his progress was a bit slower. Walsh adapted to the under 18's better as did Dowell. It was difficult for him at first given Ledson already filled a midfield spot as did Williams who were a bit older than him. He played a bit at fullback then eventually got into the side.

He has kicked on in the last 12 months. He has also grown a lot more physically and looks quite an imposing build now. People always said he was like "Ledson mk 2" as a younger player but I think his game is different.

He is a bit better at dribbling than Ledson. Not as good at tackling or marshalling the game though. He is overall a good rounded midfielder. he has a good engine, can pass it, can tackle and dribble and has a goal in him. In the Mini-derby his introduction was significant. He was Unsworths "go to" man when we were struggling and he put his foot in, disrupting Liverpool.

That day he looked every bit as good as Rossiter for Liverpool despite being younger.

Thought this was quite interesting
It meant Davies joined Toffees skipper Phil Jagielka and fellow boyhood BlueRoss Barkley, who took Davies under his wing for his first taste of senior action with the national team.

“The squad were really good with me and Ross helped me a lot,” Davies continued. “He walked out and went through the warm-up with me, so he just generally looked after me, which was really nice.

“I even managed to score twice. I had Raheem Sterling and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain attacking with me, which was unbelievable as they are both top players.”

Nice to hear Ross looked after him while he trained with the seniors.

It's fine mate, we've all grown to love Dougie, but he is a tit

Anyway, I've never actually seen this lad play, but I'm guessing @LinekersLegs and others will have ?
Really like Tom, glad he's signed a pro contract with us. One of the things that has impressed me most is his energy, earlier this year he played two games for England on the Monday & Thursday, flew to Texas on the Friday and played Sunday & Monday for Everton in the Dallas competition. Not just a work horse though, good all round midfielder.

Interesting that he was eventually one of the unused subs last night for England u17, so he was either deliberately left as sub because of his "exertions" with the 1st team or he was picked as sub early on which made him available for 1st team training. Great experience either way, and for him the real stuff starts out in Chile for the World Cup and a real chance to make a name for himself at this age level.
