He doesn't look awkward in possession or give the ball away cheaply, but I don't think I'd call him a particularly 'good' footballer.

Everton need players that can make things happen in the final third.

......he came through and broke into United's first team, he then broke into the England set up and gained a number of caps at an early age. That pedigree alone suggests he is a good footballer. There were a lot of doubters about Gibson's quality when we signed him from United.

Osman and Pienaar are at an age where we need to get replacements, I'd be happy if we managed to get Cleverley.

You could very easily be describing one Philip Neville in that first sentence.

I agree about Osman and Pienaar needing to be replaced, but I really think you're going to be disappointed if you're expecting Cleverley to offer the sort of guile and craft that they bring to the table.

Hopefully I'm wrong, but I'm very worried about how much jarg British talent will be here in twelve months time.

If they win the FA Cup I can see him staying there. If they don't, he'll probably come here.

If he does rock up at Goodison he best tell his missus show some skin.

Neville was a good buy for us. Stayed on a good 18 months too long but it wasn't a mistake to bring him in fullstop.
Not for me.

Garbage footballer and more of a prefect than a captain.

And despite what people say, I'm not convinced that his in-depth knowledge of eating bananas and going to bed at seven o'clock was particularly vital in bringing through youth players, either.

I don't think anyone would argue that. We had a dreadful record of young players coming through when he was here.

I just thought that for a decent ammount of his time here we were better with him in the team either at rb or cm than without just cos he was reasonably solid and good defensively.

Certainly Mikel Arteta played the best football of his career when alongside Neville. He was never the same when partnered with Fellaini, for instance, because he could trust neville to cover his runs forward in a way he couldn't with felli.

He was utterly awful near the end but he did alright on the whole, imo. Not that I expect everyone to agree with that but even if you I don't think it's a fair comparison to cleverley.

Neville's main problem was his age and cleverly isn't too old.

YES. I m so glad someone else praised the neville/arteta combo cause theyre my fave midfield partnership, both guys worked so well with each other and we played such great football with them together.

....I wouldn't deny we need guile and craft but we also need a squad of players, Cleverley might have a bit more that we all think but regardless it would be a good acquisition.

At the risk of incurring everybody's ire, on balance I think Neville was a good signing for the club.

Neville was decent for a little while, especially when we used him at RB and during that year we got to the final. The last 3 years or so though, when Moyes stuck him in centre-midfield with Osman, were absolutely unbearable. I still break into a cold sweat just thinking about it, it was that traumatising. People were screaming for him to be canned and then it all came to a head with the Wigan debacle. The coward went into hiding for months afterwards and didn't show his face in public until the end of the season during Moyes (and Cahill's) farewell lap around the pitch where no one would dare boo. I'll never show any warm feelings towards that t*t.

.....I suspect his medal and international cap count as well as the number of times he played for arguably the most successful ever Manchester United side suggests 'garbage' is some way from being an accurate descriptor.
