Remember Bobby has worked with him up close. I think this would end up being a steal. The lad needs a bit of Bobby's sunshine and encouragement.

I've got the utmost respect for his views on any young player he has worked with mate, for that reason i'm well behind this if it's cheap enough, also removes the need to bed a player into the system as he knows it, plus he's played alongside McCarthy before for a season so they will know each others game. If the 3 permanent signings this season ended up being Lukaku, Cleverley and the Serbian whose name i will not mention and Bobby uses the loan markey as well as he has done this season, i would feel very confident going into the next season

oh yeah and sign some young Spanish or Argie step-over ole merchant who we can all effuse about

To be fair though it's only 12 months since the general media were saying he could be Scohles replacement! Ferguson rated him, Roberto rates him, let's be honest here we all like Gibbo but he was deemed surplus before Cleverly!

Every single time I have seen him play he has been gash. Every single time.

Don't have a clue what Bobby sees in him tbh, if he did join he would surely only be back up.

He would be the perfect replacement for Osman if the comments on here are anything to go by.

We're going to need another scapegoat once Ossie hangs up his boots.

It looks like Cleverley will fit the bill.

I think players like Cleverly go under the radar a lot there is a style of footballer being developed (in fact we're prob getting back to it) that aren't obvious but play a certain role, they spread play, Carrick was prob the first, Joe Allen is another, McCarthy can play that role and people were calling him gash a year ago, football and roles are changing as systems evolve - Cleverly is one of those players in fact he's very adaptable. He's a very intelligent footballer.

He probably sees what he saw in him first hand when he had him on loan at Wigan at 21 mate, 25 games 4 goals 2 assists not a bad return like for his first season in the prem especially as Wigan only scored 37 all season that year, being a starter for their amazing run at the end of the season that year that kept them up was a impressive feat for him too.

In the end only Martinez knows what he thinks, but if he genuinely feels that the player he had at 21 can be rediscovered by managing him and playing him in the proper position with the proper motivation and encouragement then I'm not worried in the slightest if he signs him

Agree tbh, problem at United for the majority time their he's been shoehorned into a pretty poor central midfield and asked to do a job that doesn't suit what he does well

Loanee's aside martinez only seems content to part money on either wigan players, ex wigan players or ex wigan targets- thats despite us chasing the top 4, quite a worry tbh.
I think you could put Roberto's name in there instead of Wigan. It makes more sense that way. And honestly, I think it's clear than Martinez has one big desire: buy low and sell high. Think of how lukewarm we were on Felli's move. Would we trade him straight up for McCarthy? Of course not. That decision gave our club $16M.

It's pretty clear one thing about Martinez. He likes known quantities. He doesn't believe you can evaluate players on other squads with much confidence unless you've seen a lot of them. All the players he permanently signed were players he knew very well.

McGeady is the only one that doesn't make sense, and he was a steal on a cheap transfer, and so he tried to get a steal on a bit of an unknown. Barry is a pretty known quantity, and Deu was probably well-known to him being the country he plays in, and Roberto's familiarity with the league. Romelu played against Roberto a few times against Wigan, but represents one of the least known quantities. When a 20yo striker is dropped into your lap, though, you might not ask too many questions, and he's just a loan.

Reinforcing the same point, he aggressively resigns his players and talks outwardly about wanting to sign more existing players to new deals. He seems just to really value known quantities and is not easily seduced by potential and flash. From the little I've read about economics in football, it's clear that transfer markets are difficult to work well, and Martinez doesn't try to beat those odds.

I think he stopped progressing under Moyes, who certainly didn't play to his strengths, Moyes stifled creativity centrally in that team as we well know, with his obsession with getting it wide and getting crosses in the box, he likes his midfielder destroyers as we know and told Carrick and Cleverly to adapt accordingly! he was part of a league winning team and this time last year he was being talked about in the same breath as wilshire etc. you only have to look at Carrick who was some peoples player of the year last year to see how Moyes completely ruined a title winning midfield fluidity. Some of Cleverlys .play is superb the quickness of his thought is superb in terms of fostering overall pace and movement! If that can be honed consistently we would have a class act! I'd take Powell to while we're at it!
