Firstly, It's all very well saying how great Moyes is for coming out and saying that Fellaini was a naughty boy, and yes fair play to him as other managers over the seasons have come out and said they hadn't seen the incident (Wenger) or make daft excuses (Rodgers/Dalglish).
However, this all masks the 2 things I would want from a top Everton side.
A -- Why did NO-ONE approach the referee and complain ? I don't mean surrounding the referee screaming and shouting, I mean literally the captain should approach the referee on behalf of the team and simply ask him why he is allowing their players to literally assault our players.
B -- Why did Moyes not take this opportunity to also give a rundown of the number of penalties we should have had this season + the number we should have had in this particular game.
Now, neither of these excuse nutting someone but Moyes could tell the captain to approach the referee more often and also could very easily have used this media onslaught to show some issues with us not being given decisions in the area.
This leads to another couple of points. Who is our captain, is it Neville the class prefect who, as VDM stated is basically Moyes pet. Or is it Jagielka who strikes me as very similar to Neville i.e nice guy loving the game.
I can't think of a single top side in the premiership who had a captain like either of these two. For me, the captain is a player who wants to win at all costs. Someone who does not accept defeat and will go all out and do whatever is necessary to ensure we win.
Which players in our side strike you as having this sort of character? For me, it's Baines and Fellaini who happen to be our best players, other than them I can't think of anyone.
Baines is not really captain material and Fellaini leads by example but has been shown up to having a short fuse, not just on this occasion -- but does that make him a poor captain and leader ? Not when you look at some of the best captains the league has seen, Vieira, Keana, Shearer....
I'm not advocating that Fellaini should be captain, not for a second as I don't know what goes on behind closed doors. What I can see and I think most of us can see is that we lack a genuine leader in the side who could drive us on and show true leadership to push the team on to win with a never say die attitude.
The one time I've seen Neville actually do this was with his tackle on Ronaldo, other than that his soft finger pointing just doesnt cut it for me as how do you look up to a leader who is one of the worst players in the side.
For me, our next signing should of course be Jack Butland to replace Howard, but Moyes really has to find a true leader to drive us forward. It seems we need a David Moyes type character to be on the pitch just as Ferguson had his mirror image in Roy Keane.
