Hmmm. Van Persie and Rooney to come back in + signings: there's a five point gap and 18 matches to go. It'd be very optimistic to think United were out of those CL spots.

Agreed, but its the quality of their football moreso than the points gap that is the big issue. They won't get European football without a vast improvement in form. It's like when we were up there around this time last year - the points gap wasn't insurmountable, but our performances were falling away badly. You can get away with it for a few matches, but not over the course of so many games. By the time we had refound our form after the FAC exit it was too late to do anything.
