That's city proper and not surrounding areas.

Liverpool/Birkenhead (1,170,000)
Newcastle (814,000)
Sunderland (270,000)

So both quite similar sizes really

As someone who lives in the north east, you've got to remember that there's only really two teams from berwick to the tees.

Traditionally pretty much everyone north of the wear supports newcastle. We have loads and loads of big teams around our area.
 
newcastle are not a big club. if a team won the amount of trophies united have in the last two decades but were unable to build a stadium so still only had 20k capacity, would you call them small? of course not. Just because they came 2nd a couple of times in the 90's and did brilliantly (for them) last season doesn't make them that great.

they have only won the 2nd division title in the last what 60 years? i hope they're not too embarassed to have that trophy in their trophy room, the room will look pretty blank without it
