I do wonder what would have happened if he'd come out the next day and sincerely apologised saying that he got overly excited at winning and it was heat of the moment?

He still likely would have lost his job, but maybe that would have been the end of it and it wouldn't have escalated to this stage?

Or maybe it was always going to get to this point?

Sometimes a little contrition can go a long way, but in this instance it might not have gone far enough
