Shots can be a misleading stat. A tap in from a yard and a long range 30 yarder sighter both count as 1 shot but obviously one is way more likely to go in. Raw shot numbers don't take into account that difference.

The last two decent sides Kazakhstan played were Hungary and Bulgaria this time last year

They beat Hungary 3-2 and only narrowly lost to Bulgaria 1-2

So they're hardly crap. Barely anyone in Europe is truly crap now

It's not like the 70's-90's when you'd expect the top sides to destroy half the group 7-0 or something

UEFA is an incredibly competitive confederation

Outside of maybe 2-3 teams, no one is getting battered every time out any more

They might still lose, but it'll be by 2 or 3 and they can't be underestimated, because they can catch teams, like has happened here
