A question came to mind during Blackburn v Preston after penalty award that Andy Hinchcliffe believed was "very harsh". If a player attempts a tackle, and misses the ball but catches the opposition player it's assumed to be a foul, and in the area a penalty. Why is it not the same for headers? The defenders head connected quite firmly with the attacking players chin, nowhere near the ball. Am I in the minority thinking the referee made the right decision?

Those seem to be given more these days. Same with a keeper. The keeper used to be able to punch the attacker if they mistimed it and not give away a penalty, but they're given these days.

Must say, i was a cynic to the Swiss model, and whilst it has flaws... I found the process to be enjoyable in all 3 leagues so far.

Does it benefit the bigger clubs? Maybe? But I've seen Brest, Lille, Sporting and Celtic qualify... would they normally have done so?

The ability to play 2 sides from the same pot, I feel only benefitted them. Perhaps in a non "freak" year where Brest, Girona & Bologna all qualified from the "big" leagues it'd be less skewed, but i enjoyed it.
Apart from Lille, they haven't qualified for the final 16 though.
