My theory that the worst Italian team in history somehow cost England its best-ever chance of a trophy gains credence with every passing week. Remember, the anomaly here is Euro 2020, not what came before or after. I said it at the time that England would never have a better chance...and somehow they blew it. Italy were/are at an historic low at the moment - as are Germany, for that matter. The Italians have failed to make back-to-back World Cups for the first time in their history. The Germans, meanwhile, failed to get out of a World Cup group for the first time since 1938 in 2018 - and followed it up last year. Unprecedented. And England? Well, they are running out of precious time to capitalise.
