Which is what I'm getting at with the Spain 2010 comparison - same engine room as Barca, but without Messi there was no swashbuckling. They just kept opponents from doing anything constructive and bided their time to find a chink in the armor.

Remember how defense was the big question mark for Chelsea going into the season after Abramovich bought all those attackers, and how everyone said the back four just wasn't good enough?

The back four wasn't good enough but if you play a back five and throw in two DMs suddenly you've got something.

Chelsea have been very good ever since Tuchel sorted them at the back. It's an unattractive type of good, but very good nevertheless.

They remind me a bit of France and Spain's methodical marches to world titles in the last decade.

If they hadn't wasted 2/3 of this season with fat frank, they'd be comfortably second in the league.

It's a classic for the same reasons as Rocky IV.

Debatably, these are not good reasons. They're great period pieces with no self-awareness of the fact that they're going to be regarded as period pieces.
