TBF looking at their squad and rookie manager I thought they'd finish top 8. But tbf that's probably less a case of them over performing than me not really knowing what I'm talking about
We’ve definitely over performed. I thought top 8-10, qualifying from the group stage of the CL and a cup semi would be a decent return, so more than happy with our return. Still hated this season though....

Yes, well if one was to take RAWK as gospel, Chelsea will never be a threat while Lampard is manager as he is crap (after 2 seasons as a coach). They seem to like Eddie Howe and Bournemouth on there though. Hmmm....

Lampard narrowly missed promotion with Derby and got CL with a Chelsea team unable to sign anyone, had just lost Hazard and had to rely on young players. Seems to have a lot going for him as a coach reckon if yas stay patient with him you could be challenging for title again in a few years.

How is Lampard getting a load of praise for taking a side that finished 3rd and won a European trophy, to 4th? He's done a decent job sure, but nothing more than par.

Irish cup semi finals on bbc website today and one got scheduled for 4pm.

4pm on a Monday. Have you ever seen a stranger kick off time in all your life. In a part time league where most of the players have jobs as well lol

Done a great job. Realistically... what did you hope for this season?

Some people i think in the media were looking at Spurs season as being a successful one for Chelsea.

Recruited solidly, and crucially you'll be losing Kepa next season, so you've got it all to play for.

Maybe because unlike every other team around them he couldn't improve the squad as well as losing by far their best player (Hazard)?

They brought in Pulisic, who is excellent. They're doing some great business this summer too but let's not pretend he didn't inherit a very good squad.

Now if he came here and got us 4th place, then I'd be impressed.

Whilst Pulisic is great he was still untested in the league and coming in for Hazard.

Not arguing they don't have a good strong but think it's unfair not to give Lampard credit for getting CL football when they couldn't sign a single new player when they already had some obvious deficiencies.

I like Lampard and like that they've given him a chance so early in he's managerial career.
As for not being able to spend for two transfer windows,
"Welcome to our world lol."
I do think though, that in preparation of a transfer ban, they bought someone for big money, left him somewhere on loan and then brought him back in to get over the ban and they also had the advantage of still having big money to spend after the ban.

That team last season was totally different to the one this season though and no transfer window to improve it.

I do question Lampard but Christ is that an indefensible selection of views. I doubt we will be seeing Eddie back. The talented players they have will find PL homes and they'll have to rebuild from scratch.

They had to rely on young players who were really good. In fact Chelsea has done such a good job at recruiting talented youngsters recently that they might be better off if they did that more often. Plus Hazard was very capably replaced by Pulisic. I just think Chelsea had the third best squad this year just like they did last year and they finished third both years. Sarri won the Europa League and Lampard might win the FA Cup. IMO he hasn't made progress as much as stabilized things which is fine for now and definitely won't be next year.

Where I worry about Lampard is team selection. The distribution of minutes doesn't lineup with the distribution of talent in that squad this season. He needs to figure out who the best players are next year or it won't work.

They've had Pulisic, Mount, Zouma, Tomori and James all return from loan. It just made them use the talented players they've recruited and loaned out for all these years. The transfer ban might have done them a favor tbh. Imagine they got banned when they refused to give De Bruyne and Salah minutes instead.

Exactly. It isn't like the transfer ban made the Chelsea squad thin or devoid of talent.
