Tim Howard

There's actually so many other things he's gotten away with that people forget about. I think a season defining moment in 13/14 was definitely Gareth Barry coming to the rescue against Chelsea after Howard had decided to pass to Schurrle inside his own box

Berahino's goal for WBA was awful from start to finish. Howard lashes the ball out to Funes Mori when it blatantly isn't on. Mori miscontrols and loses it, Barry air kicks, Jags and Browning stop running, Howard comes out halfway when he had all the time he wanted to pick it up, then tries to anticipate Berahino's finish and gets it all wrong. Just a really bad goal from start to finish.

thats insanity tbh, ive already had to put the palace highlights up in this thread once before for joey66, it was an absolute miracle Joel got a clean sheet that day.

Insanity, or maybe someone with a differing opinion. I disagree with you mate that's allowed.

What was that game he came out his area, only just realised too late he couldn't pick the ball up, so fell on the ball without using his hands and managed to get it away and passed it off as some great keeping. It was one of the most embarrassing things I've ever seen from a top flight keeper.

Thats the one.

I get some of the points from people supporting him, with pointing out errors from other players and it's true that the squad in general was pretty awful last season.

It's also true that keepers errors get noticed more as they can often lead directly to a goal, however despite this the best keepers around keep those bad mistakes and poor decision making to a minimum...impressively so given the burden of responsibility on them. Howard has been a very good keeper for us at times in the past, but I personally think he has been badly erratic and unreliable for about 4 years now.

There is no use him having one of his great games where he makes some great stops, if he then flaps at a corner once and they score or goes down too early in a one on one. Or has a great game and then follows it up with a few poor games. The occasional great moment or the decent stats are papering over what is, for me, a clear flaw in the team. I don't know how anybody can't see that, unless they are just reacting to the over-criticism by being over-defensive. I don't see much detail in the argument from anybody who thinks he is good enough to keep that number 1 shirt for us.

You have to be loyal with keepers, and allow them some bad patches and a few howlers, but it's been like this for too long and is getting a bit like Jelavic all over again. Persisting and hoping he will come good again, when we should be pro-active and look to the future in the way we have done with many other areas of the team.

Having said all that, I don't agree with the posters who seem to love really putting the boot in to whoever is "not good enough" in their eyes. Top gun supporting right there.....

No but like literally... who the Hell is even out that we'd want around for the next 5+ years and isn't already at a top club? We're never linked in the press.

Summer we got Karius (signed a new contract), Nyland (moved to sit on the bench), Szczesny (Roma), Ospina (gash)...

There's not much out there that inspires me with any confidence.

Just face it, Howard is gonna do a Friedel and play for another 5 years.

There must be a decent-ish keeper in the world we could get. I don't know who as i'm not as up on world football as I once was, but there must be someone.

I'm like a proper FIFA stat addict and even I can't really think of anyone realistic anymore. Has the depths of the Uruguayan division got anyone for us? Problem now is established goalkeepers are so in the limelight the massive teams buy them and they also buy the next-big-thing 18-year old keepers too. It's worrying who we'll end up with.

Like using this - granted it pastes properly - is a list of the goalkeepers on FIFA with the highest potential. I know it's all subjective and it's FIFA but looking down the list, who isn't either unattainable or just a complete Polish unknown?

there was quite a few who looked good in the last WC and they all ended up going to good teams. Look at fabianski, whenever he played for arsenal he seemed a bit iffy. he was second choice at arsenal for a long time when they had bad goalkeeping options, but last season after his move he got the highest clean sheets in the league or something?

i think about half of teh keepers in the championship are better than howard. at a team like us they don't have an awful lot to do. Preferably we could just do with someone who come and takes control of crosses with ease. they don't even need to be that good at shot stopping if we're being overly honest.

you see keepers like heaton and marshall in the championship who would more than do a job imo.

He's ok. But we need a keeper thats better than ok.
LOL

Aye, definitely a position we need to strengthen.

calm down, it'll be ok

Howard is declining with age as all players do and more than likely needs to be replaced or have more competition brought in to challenge him. That said, he really is not as bad as some are making out. Even during a poor season he made some superb saves that kept us in games and before anybody get upset and feels the need to point it out I am well aware that he also lost us some points too...

I think this is why opinions on Howard are so diverse. He can be a good shot stopper (although rarely these days) if he has to make a reaction save where he hasn't got time to think, rather than having to make a decision on what to do. For example, Wolfsburg at home last season he was brilliant. However, he's awful at just about every other aspect of goalkeeping.

He has no command of his area whatsoever. We concede so many goals from headers within the 6 yard box because Howard is rooted to his line, rather than coming out to claim the ball. When he does come out, he looks a complete bag of nerves.

Ironically, those times he should stay on his line, he's often miles off it, leading to more goals conceded. He doesn't get criticised that much for this because people tend to look at how difficult it was to save the actual shot, rather realising that it would have been an easy save if Howard had been in the right position. For example, both goals in the 2-0 defeat at home to Sunderland towards the end of last season.

He does this thing on direct free-kicks where he shifts his weight really heavily from one foot to the other (also does a little shuffle on long range shots, resulting in him diving too late), so that if he shifts one way at the same time as the free-kick taker shoots the other way, he's off balance and can't get across his goal to make the save. Goals conceded from free-kicks at Anfield and Sunderland last season, which should have been easy saves, were prime examples of this.

I haven't even mentioned all the inexplicable clown antics, where you just find yourself saying, "Why the [insert suitable swear word] did he do that?" Falling on the ball at Sunderland, the star jumps, etc, etc.

He's well past his sell by date. Need to get rid.
