I don't normally post on here (lurker) but come on people my beautiful fellow blues lets lay off Tim Howard he's a great keeper, okay he has his moments but so does every goalie, cortouis, sczchezney*, mingotit but he has been boss for us and im sorry to all the joel lovers but he's got nothing on Tim.

Spot on mate. I recall when Steven Naismith was forever scapegoated. But it just describes the fickleness of your typical football fan's favour to now see him recognised in proper light

Think the reason why Howard's mistakes are highlighted more, is because they are normally very, very, very bad mistakes.

We shouldn't even have to argue over whether the "good outweighs the bad". That just shows how badly average he is.

Anybody who is happy with Tim Howard as our keeper must be happy with midtable mediocrity. Great goalkeepers win you games.

Fans of truly long suffering teams have the same level of hope as Evertonians - maybe we'll be bought and run competently.

The point is that in the NFL, even terrible teams can dream of making that one great coaching hire and finding that next great QB. And the great NFL franchises aren't great b/c of being "big" they are great b/c they are well-run organizations - more or less teams are on equal economic footing. the closest we have to the Prem is the MLB where the Yankees and LA teams can outspend everyone, but now we are finding there that the smaller markets can compete if they allocate their funds correctly. I thought we were well on our way to being the Moneyball team of the Prem, but it's looking at current like that squad is Southampton, which is frustrating.

And great GK's cost 15-20M unless you strike lucky on an unknown. They also want to play in teams fighting for titles and playing CL footy.

Without heinseight Howard has been the best we could of got in our situation over the past how many ever years.

I'd also argue very loud that his mistakes out weigh his performances that have kept us in games.

A step up from Howard will not come cheap or easily. I'd love to upgrade to begovic personally.

This was precisely my point though. It was initially a critique of the idea that Americans like to root for winning teams - which I resolutely and steadfastly deny. There a huge amounts of casual sports fans the world over that like to root for winning teams, but Americans are no more 'glory hunting' than any other nationality.

The Browns etc. require a change in ownership or management to succeed - much like Everton seem to require a change in ownership (with more money) to succeed. My whole argument is that this:

Americans like winning and fair competitions. Therefore supporting a club that doesn't win anything in the most corrupt sporting 'competition' in the world is unlikely to appeal.

is an overly simplistic and fatalistic viewpoint that lets our current marketing and commercial teams off the hook for their utter incompetence.
