Tim Howard - new contract

I don't know any other team in the 'top 8' that would give a 35 year old a new contract until he's 39.

Well, I don't know about 35 year old players, Mr. B......but Manchester United gave Ryan Giggs a new contract when he was 38 and extended it for another year when he was 40 meaning he was still playing for them when he was 41.

Spurs actually signed Brad Friedel three years ago when he was 40 and just this summer extended it for another year.

So there are two other "top 8" clubs at least which aren't ageist ;)

You're comparing one year contract extensions to a contract lasting four years. You just proved my point. Thanks.

De Gea is nothing special, ok he pulled off 2 top saves today and was possibly the best United player, but over the course of a season he will and has made far more solo mistakes than Howard will.
Well he's got some catching up to do already. He might catch Howard though if he can make or four mistakes each game over the next twenty.

Apart from his howler of an attempted clearance, TH had a decent game at OT yesterday.

The thing right now is that El Bob needs to tell all the back four and indeed the whole squad that in times of pressure on the defence, finding Row Z is acceptable if it buys a little time to compose themselves and get into position.

I'm sure that if they're critical of themselves that both Jags and TH will wish now that they'd hammered the ball into touch rather than trying for the clearances they attempted that both backfired.

In general though we need to play with more pace, we need to try and play the ball ahead of the runner as much as possible rather than straight to feet or behind as invariably we tend to check and that loses momentum and forward direction.

I for one wasn't expecting much if anything from OT, but to miss a penalty and having had their 'keeper make two top class saves in the final ten minutes still leaves me with a somewhat bitter aftertaste. Di Maria apart, they were no better than average and we failed to get at them enough, particularly first half.

The problem with keepers is the mistakes they make that lead to goals gets highlighted far more than the outfield players, and because we have been such a mess across the back 4, its making it harder for Howard than it would be if we were either better organise, or had a better CB partnership.

De gea is better than Howard in always possible

He was by far the best player in a poor United team lady season

Sorry, Mr.B.

It doesn't work that way.

You point was shown to be totally off the mark.

The more sensible option at this stage is just to laugh and accept it.

Not bluster on, adding bits on which weren't in your original, erroneous post.

:)

There's a difference from extending a contract 4 times to giving a 4 year deal.

Why on earth did we give Howard a 4 year deal? Why give Barry a 3 year deal? Why give Hibbert a 2 year deal?

The only thing I can guess is that it meant them accepting less per week which a) helps the cashflow situation and b) doesn't work out to be much different in cost.

Still that's just guess work and on face level it just seems odd.

Regarding Howard. I think we need to bring in someone in January and offload Joel so that Howard can be backup. If Mourinho can make the difficult but correct decision to replace Cech with Coutouis then Bobby can do the same with Howard.

De Gea is a very special goalkeeper. He's excellent. The mistakes he made regularly 2 seasons are almost entirely absent now. Howard has already made more mistakes than him this season than De Gea will in its entirety.
I rate Howard, but he's not immune to criticism- his mental state in games isn't quite there at the moment. But I like him. But if you were to offer me De Gea there really is no debate over who I'd have.
