Tim Cahill

They say opinions are like ar5eholes..... Tim Cahill stayed too long is one that baffles me more than any other.

Tim Cahill embodied everything you need in a team player. Never gave less than 100% he'd fight to win a throw in like his life depended on it. He was a leader on the pitch, leading by example. Hard little [Poor language removed] who looked after his teammates when retribution needed to be dished out. And he was clever with it.

For me, his problem started when Moyes signed Felaini. supposed to be a holding mid, but was a bit of a liability there, so had to push him up. Definitely his best position still, but it definitely clashed with TC.

We definitely missed him. Imagine the impact he could have had from the bench. A player like that doesn't come round that often. We should have kept him & put him on the backroom staff.

So many fannies in the game & wasters who just don't care. Tim Cahill got it.

Rudolf, being part of the back room staff wouldn't have suited Cahill, you are not in the limelight on the back room staff.

This, absolutely.

The emergence of Fellaini further upfield around 2009-2010 meant Tim was less effective as he struggled to find the space and "ghost" in past defenders that was his trademark.

He was a leader on the pitch, had a never-say-die attitude and from the opposition point of view was a bit of a snide, something we badly missed in the "nice guy" Martinez years.

Put it this way, in hindsight I'd rather have had an ageing Cahill over an ageing Osman in the Everton side going into the Martinez years any day of the week.

Just goes to show how the once mighty everton have fallen when people talk about Tim as a great everton player. Yes he gave 100% and at the time he was what we needed. But he was a very average player in a very average team. I feel so sorry for the young uns on this forum when they eulogise about players like Tim. Oh how I long for the good times to come back.

It's hard to compare players from different eras as the game has changed so much. Would Cahill be a great compared to the '85 side or Catterick's teams? Probably not, but in much the same way as Ferguson is often labelled a "great" from the late 1990's / early 2000's sides, Cahill was a standout in the Everton teams he played in.

It's no coincidence that we started getting consistent 5th/6th finishes in the league when Cahill (and a couple of other key players) signed on for us.
