Probably not the worst player you could hope to penny pinch coming into the final day of the window but I've never been impressed by Vermaelen. When he first joined arsenal he got far more credit for his early performances than he deserved as he seemed to have a knack of scoring goals (including one against us on his debut in that 6-1...) defensively he always looked very shaky to me.

I'll look past that though, anything to break up the geriatric axis of Jags and Williams, ANYTHING!

Vermaelen is 32 in November; so he'll probably make our backline only pleasantly senile rather than geriatric

Even if you get a handful of games out of him worth the risk surely.

Not really happy with this link (if true). Can see your logic though and I will just about accept it if we bring in a good striker (signed, not loaned).

...fine player but he's not got the biggest frame for somebody who has played in such a physically demanding position. When that's the case, time usually catches up. Let's hope we don't need back up for the back up.
