Things i've learnt from the Everton forum today.

Does anybody else think we need a defensive coach. Not exactly Roberto's strongest suit. Two soft goals in Game 1 both defensive errors and nerves were jangling with each set piece?

1. We can't defend corners (opponents get there first).
2. We never score from our own corners (opponents get there first).
3. We always struggle with teams who play hoofball.

No, because we had the 3rd best defensive record in the league last season.

It's just an utter myth that people like to cling to that Martinez' is clueless when it comes to defence. He's not. He's far more savvy than Brendan Rodgers is, whose team conceded 11 more goals than Everton last season, or even Arsene 'the famed Arsenal back 4' Wenger, who conceded 2 more goals than Everton did.

I know some people are disappointed that we drew a game yesterday, but there's a lot of rubbish being chatted in the aftermath.
I'm not chatting rubbish, we were badly prepared for that game.
Last season is now last season.
We conceded 2 soft goals and dropped 2 points as a result in the first game of this season.
Either the defenders were poor or the defensive set up was poor, or both.
Granted we didn't play too many games with Stones at RB and Coleman is a far superior defender than him but the defensive approach through the friendlies and yesterday looked a bit amateurish.
We need to be proactive

I agree , let's do something about it. While we concentrate on keep ball and therefore don't do the crossing from free kicks and corners thing. We are always going to have to play teams that will disrupt keep ball. With hoof ball!

I don't know why anyone gets upset about people getting upset.

There will always be a load of rubbish posted on match days, and the Moonies that can't accept any sort of criticism of Martinez or the players are as bizarre as the doom mongers that think a jarg clearance from Distin is a sign of the Rapture.

It's all part of the fun of wasting hours of your life on football forums.

Yep, it's a match day thread, the most reactionary thread we are going to have, and most of us end up posting without thinking at some point in it

Already posted today that there's actual stuff you can have a go at Martinez about, such as his '5 or 6 players to boost the squad size' comments which effectively haven't materialised at all.

I just don't think the match yesterday was as bad as some of the people here claim it was. I was there yesterday and people were not reacting like the world was coming to an end when we drew. Nearly everyone stayed and applauded the team off. Sometimes I wonder if people saw the same game I did.

I'm going to save your Stones comments mate, there will be some vaulting when he's bossing it at center half, I'm sure you won't mind being proved wrong on that one, as with the Barkley thread a couple of seasons ago, how people can't see he has top class footballer written all the way through him amazes me
Absolutely, I'm saying he's a crap right back not that he's a crap centre half. Let me know when he's a class right back.

not quite what you said yesterday, but I can let match day comments slide
I don't rate him tbh and respect your opinion and that of many others and I do hope to be proved wrong, i want us to have a top class youngster. I think he's a poor option at RB and I don't think that will change but again would be happy if he turns that around in the future

I wasn't singling you out or anything like that. There just always seems to be lots of moaning about people moaning, as well as general point scoring, going on.

I agree that yesterday wasn't terrible. I think it's just particularly frustrating when they drop points late on. It's been a constant issue since Moyes' last season.

TBF he was thrown in at right back at a higher level - he is better than an old past it Tony Hibbert - It was the long ball or set pieces we seem to mess up not just yesterday but last season too - Jags and Distan look great on the ground but any set piece corner etc we have no ball winner in the defence in the air it was like that last season at times too!

I think I'd chalk yesterday up to bad luck. Their first goal was a clearance that bounced off Ulloa's arm and fell right to him. The second was worse defending wise but there were tackles and the ball again fell right to the scorer. Doesn't excuse the defending completely but I don't think that on the backs of this game we can predict this season to be a regression into 7th or 8th. If we lose to both Arsenal and Chelsea it's a different story.
