As of 2009, fewer than 60 countries (less than a third of the total) actively retain the death penalty.

At least 8,864 people (and probably considerably more) were sentenced to death during 2008, and at the end of the year as many as 30,000 were on death row around the world - with the largest death row populations being in Pakistan (approximately 7500) and the USA (over 3000).

China carries out by far the greatest number of actual executions. While Amnesty International has confirmed at least 1718 executions there during 2008 the true figure is certain to be much higher. Estimates suggest the annual figure may have been as high as 7,500 in recent years - although this may have dropped back since the Supreme People's Court (SPC) replaced local courts in the appeals process.

very sad state of affairs no matter what he should have been sent home to do his time 4k = death is nothing more than barbaric imho just above savagry

Relax senor. That was a bit of sarcasm on my part. However I'm confident that based on their human rights track record, this guy didn't get any kind of due process at all. Innocent before proven guilty?

Not in China.

Well, he was convicted after a lengthy, drawn out trial that lasted 30 minutes.

The opinions here are pretty baffling to say the least. I'd even say racist.

If you take drugs to another country, and one with such a bad track record in 'human rights' aren't you at the mercy of that countries laws?

Plenty of Aussies get done in Indonesia for the same thing, the Bali Nine are on Death row for Heroin, Schapelle Corby is doing life for Pot. But we don't kill people anymore, neither do the Brits (well not on our home soil anyway), but the US still have the death penalty, which makes some posters reactions here strange to say the least.

If you decide to do something as stupid a trafficking drugs, your going to face the consequences. Sure, in our countries you can get a cosy room with three square meals a day for such a crime, but in China, the Middle East, countries where they will kill you if you break their laws, that's what your going to get. They don't care if your a nutter, if you decide to carry out a crime which states 'We will kill you if you are found guilty' which he was, then that's the rule. They don't give a [Poor language removed] if you have a mental illness that makes you traffic drugs. And it states he was found two years ago, not last week.

"As for his possible mental illness which has been much talked about, there apparently has been no previous medical record." "Mr Shaikh's lack of official medical records is no excuse for failing to give him a psychiatric assessment or offer him the treatment he needed,"

So he doesn't have any records of a mental illness. Strange that he would need treatment for it then.

His daughter has said drug smugglers in Poland convinced him they would make him a popstar in China

I'd rather see a heroin dealer die than see what happens to the people affected by what this stuff can do. I've seen it first hand. It destroys lives and lives of those around it. To be so lenient is a shocking option.

You talk hard truths, why are you still allowed on here let alone not knee deep in the red?
There is another aspect to this story for my money, and I wonder whether if the guy had been white with a name like John Barret that the very heavy political pressure would have had more grounding.
Anyway, should have got himself up the duff like this drug-smuggling-dealing-in-death-whore Samantha Orobator describes 'unimaginable nightmare' in Laos jail - Telegraph

Honestly, China don't give two tosses.

My point is that you do the crime, you should do the crime. Something this Reprieve lot don't seem to understand.

Can lead a horse to water, but cannot make it drink. Heaven forbid but just wait till some criminal permanently affects one of their family and watch their chorus change. Between me and you, it is simple hypocrisy, but some of the simplest lessons are the hardest to learn, which is why when they are, such a song and dance is made. Philosophically speaking (if I dare) maybe that is what makes such lessons so simple, the sheer number they ensnare. c'est la vie. [On a side note, I hope the drug-scum-son-of-a-bitch had his organs removed and given to someone that will appreciate the gift of life by not trying to harm others]

so are you saying he deffo knew it was in there then ? cos he claimed he didn't know, yes he was in posession but what if he didnt know ?

No one caught ever admits they knew it was there. Heavens, there have been people caught with heroin and cocaine taped to their balls that swear they didn't know it was there, same with those that get caught pooping out pounds of the stuff - "how did those plastic covered parcels of drugs get into my body?". Crappola!

Deal in death, served with it. Take a chance, caught and pay for it.
