2025/26 Thierno Barry

How did he do? From the extended highlights and his little Twitter player cam thing still looked super uncomfortable with a football and that header attempt... well.
Worked hard to get the team up the pitch and offer an outlet, and his hold-up play was mostly decent enough.

Looking at what Brentford got at a similar price / age in Thiago, it's difficult to see this ever being viewed as a success. Barry may hopefully contribute a bit before moving on sooner rather than later, but there's no getting away from how stiff and unnatural he is on the ball.

yeah , I don't subscribe to the fact La Liga is a 'pub league' but there's still nothing really exceptional in that vid from Barry is there?
For 6'5" his seeming inability with his head seems pretty exceptional. What is telling is that he's like Beto last season when his luck was in, get to the ball and get a go on target, I'm not seeing a lot of composure, it's crash bang wallop when on goal.

liverpool dominating real madrid recently who have mbappe, vinny jnr and bellingam and rashford turning into prime lionel messi at barcelona after being deemed a failure by a man utd side that finished below us last season suggests otherwise

cristiano ronaldo even recently said the saudi league is as difficult as playing in la liga

athletico madrid lost 4-0 to arsenal

the same arsenal side that just drew to recently promoted sunderland

I think the PL is miles ahead of any other European leagues, though tbf Rashford is hardly the first utd player to leave and look a complete different player. Think that's more an issue with them as a club specifically.

Was surprised by the Madrid result tho.

A very telling video. Can't score with his head, and all his goals in the vid are one touch finishes played through for him.

This isn't really a highlight video, it's just from a couple of games that bein had the rights to. It's not from the whole season. This is probably better if you put any stock in highlight videos:

fair point re Real Madrid but Ronaldo is being disingenuous to say the least to make himself look better. Athletico result was a bit of an outlier as they are always usually competitive and to use your own argument against you were a bit unlucky at Anfield.

If he had composure and could head it he’d be playing up front for a champions league team. Look at Jackson playing for Bayern, or Delap at Chelsea, Gyokeres at Arsenal, Hoijlund at Napoli, Ekitike at Liverpool. These players have massive deficiencies to their games yet are starting at CL clubs. If Barry was lerhal in the air and had finishing composure he wouldn’t be at Everton for 29 mill. The hope is he can develop some of these skills whilst whew and we end up with a good striker.

The striker market as a whole is very weak now. In Moyes’s first spell we were given a clear run at Yakubu because the top clubs had better players. If anytime Yakubu was on the market now with his touch and composure he’d be over 100 million and would have his choice of clubs.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say he actually is very good in the air - I really think it's one of his strengths that he'll start to show here once he's settled.

His composure is definitely a weakness though, he does tend to try and smash it rather than just place it. Hopefully that can be worked on, and I'm inclined to think it can - as I've pointed out before his career path means he's had an extremely minimal amount of high-level coaching for his age.

The gamble we've taken with Barry is actually kind of similar to the gamble we took with Dibling.

Barry: can you take a young striker with all the physical qualities you want (6'5, huge leap, fast, strong enough to carry and shield the ball) and coach the other weaker parts of his game (finishing, first touch) to match them?

Dibling: can you take a young winger with gamebreaking dribbling and ball-carrying and coach him to add the shooting and passing to become an all-round attacking monster?
