2025/26 Thierno Barry

You're right, however I would put myself out on a limb and suggest that, on average, you don't get many great players for free.

Additionally, the mean value of a player is, more often than not, correlated with their ability. In terms of a being a Prem player, I'd say more yes than no.

Isaak cost £125m and has scored two league goals. Gyökeres cost £56m and has scored five league goals. Igor Jesus cost £10m and scored 1.

João Pedro cost £55m and has scored six league goals. Woltemade cost £65m and scored seven. Broja cost £20m and scored 1. Delap has scored none.

Cunha has scored three league goals, costing £62m. I could keep going through, although I've hopefully gave enough examples to support my point.

Whilst he's far from the finished article, and we need him to develop further, for the price we paid his return is fairly comparable with others.
This has been my take. Young player, new league (having moved a lot in the last 2-3 seasons, each time a step up)

Lukaku cost 28m in 2014. He’d have cost 80m today.

Barry is the equivalent of a 10m player compared to a Lukaku at 28m.

That’s the context. He’s there to develop and he’s showing signs of improvement (albeit clearly not in a straight line).

Everyone wanted to develop players and adopt a Brighton like approach.

This is what it looks like.

Literally his only other goal was a fantastic right footed finish lol
If you watch that goal Barry receives a pass from Dwight who looked a bit better down the middle last night - & made the pass to garner who's fantastic skill in beating a man - Barry pointed where he wanted the ball control was a bit bundled but what matters he kept it slotted it home the keeper did get a hand to it - so at the end of the day a well worked goal by Barry -

No one has mentioned the sitter Tarks made with O'Brien in an easier place to score stood behind him .....

Barrys goal the build up with him involved was really really good ....

Seems to be dominantly left footed. Needs to start to find the bottom left corner, putting the ball into the bottom right corner is allowing the GK a chance at a save. Couldn't believe his luck last night when the defence went awol and Garner played him in almost into step.
That natural first hit like Lukaku and Yak and Cottee had. One chance, one goal, done.

He's 100% not left-footed.

The lads on the minibus had a new song for him last night, to the tune of 'auf weidersehen pet'

Well he couldn’t score a goal, he was nearly on the dole, Thierno Barry,

We thought he was blind but now he’s doing fine, Thierno Barry,

All he needed was a chance, he’ll soon be playing for France, Thierno Barry

Cos we signed him from Spain remember his name, Thierno Barry

I imagine he will be thrilled with that 😳

I have probably said this already, but unless we start consistently getting quality crosses in (preferably before the defense is set) and start making through balls (like Dwight made it easy for Garner and Garner made it easy for Barry), our strikers will kind of be thrown under the bus.

They are basically acting as a foil and are being used to set up other players as opposed to the other way around. Dom had his best season for us when he was told to be a poacher by Carlo and don't obsess over the hard yards. You can't do everything. Other people have to create for you as well.

Amazing that this doesn't even include Niasse, Tosun, Broja...

Gyokeres hasn't looked great either, and also cost around 65m - and is playing with an unbelievable team around him. Delap has been a sick note. Ekitike and Woltemade have looked very good but cost 70-80m. Isak...

He has lots of developing to do but I still stand by thinking that in a year's time we'll be very happy with Barry for 27m given a) how expensive strikers are and b) how much money needs to be spent elsewhere in the squad.
It was genuinely incredible how many people acted like Gyokeres and Delap were these superstars that we messed up by not signing, when the entire body of evidence for Gyokeres was based upon being alright in the championship then scoring for fun in a league that always has guys who score for fun that rarely kick on in more competitive leagues, and Delap based upon getting a few goals before the league pretty clearly figured him out (over his last 26 games for Ipswich, he scored a grand total of 4 non-penalty goals!).
