I think realistically we need a comfortable £100m+ to challenge for the title.

We have a fine foundation but two things are lacking at the moment.

Firstly we lack real world class players. Players that could be considered amongst the best in the world in their position. Ronaldo, Gerrard, Fabregas, Lampard. Players like that. To challenge for the title we need someone like that.

Secondly we'd need much greater depth to the squad because realistically we're not going to win the title next season, so it will involve perhaps CL football as the first step and then to win the PL whilst also competing in the CL. That needs 20 players, of all comparable quality. I don't think we really have that yet.

We've done well this season but we have to remember that we're still 20 points behind United, who are also riding high in the FA and CL competitions. They're the benchmark we're up against.

86-87 finished 11th 30 pts behind the Champions.
87-88 finished 2nd 9 pts behind the Champions.
88-89 finished 11th 25 pts behind the Champions
89-90 finished 13th 31 points behind the Champions
90-91 finished 6th 24 pts behind the Champions.
