That's why the US is first & foremost a constitutional republic. Part of those powers the republic set-up was to allow Presidential pardons. It is the rule of law. It's just a rule of law some don't like.

….the fundamental principle of the ‘rule of law’ is that every citizen is equal in the eyes if the law. This is not the ‘rule of law’, it’s the American constitution saying the political elite are not treated the same as everybody else.

No, no it's not. The US constitution does not say Presidential pardons are limited only to the political elite. Now, what it means in practice may be something close to your claim but the constitution says nothing like what you say it does.

It's never been true, though. Even in the UK, look at the disparity in convictions and sentencing between the upper classes and working classes. There's even disparity between north/south.

Agree. The presidential pardon thing is an anti-democratic, anti-rule of law disgrace.

Biden another in a long line of allowing people to swerve justice. Made all the worse by his repeated denials that he would do so for his bellend of a son. Pretty disgraceful from Biden.

(See, it’s easy to criticise, when you’re not part of a cult following)

Yeah the pardon system is really bizarre. You break the law, you should be held accountable...at least that seems to be the principle. But every president gets to wave a magic wand at some (but certainly not all) and they get exonerated. Weird system, and now Biden's pardon will dominate the media cycle while Trump continues to appoint unqualified, anti-science, anti-government hacks--these idiotic appointments should be getting all the media's attention.

I can’t get my head around the pardon system but it’s insane that one has created outrage and the other crickets , it’d be weird but 2024 is I suppose .

It's not a US-specific system though, pretty sure Royal Pardons were always a thing (at least with British monarchs) and I guess when the Republic was being set up it seemed natural to want to ape that prerogative. Over time our own system has become a lot more regulated via Government advice, but as the US hates to change anything that wasn't written down in the 18th century it's probably still working more like the Royal version.

Looking around the world it seems a common enough for Republics to have a pardon system, but similarly, they're likely a bit more restricted than Presidential fiat.
