Even if he is lacks the sense to see that these moves will help China's soft power, you'd assume/hope that there would still be people at the Whitehouse to paint the picture to him.

I reckon concerns regarding how far in bed Musk is with China are valid if you look at the depth of his supply chain committments there. It'd would be unusual if there were not conversations regarding the US, possibly back room agreements.

It was bad enough when you just had the Trump and Russia situation to contend with.
