The best way for the Canadians to stop this talk is to say ok, but we want it as three states (not one) with full political representation - senators, reps etc plus two Supreme Court justice picks of their choice - and French being made an official language of the US.

The circle around Trump will drop it at once.
Like the French will accept that. "They're not butchering our language like they have les rosbifs!".

We have to call this bully's bluff and make it as painful to the American Consumer as we can. It's the only way they will learn they don't get to vote in a bully and escape without catching a punch in the face

Cut off the oil, cut off the power, cut off the potash. Concede nothing.

No matter what happens after this the feeling of betrayal will remain in Canada.

The Four Nations hockey tournament in Montreal should be fun.
Here’s the flaw in your plan. He doesn’t care.

Cutting off your exports will also cause a lot of pain for Canadians. It’s a lose lose game at the moment.

Sadly he never really did or has or will.
I can already see the presser 6 months from now.

“President Trump, egg, dairy, and lumber prices are at all time highs, hurting the pockets of working Americans and leading to more hunger in families across the country. Do you think your policies have had a negative affect?”

“Biden caused all of this!”

"Trudeau wouldn't secede sovereignty and guarantee lower prices for all of the u.s and Canada. He is a traitor and a stooge for China...."

Madness how the richest man in the world is responsible for the disbursement of finances, he's more powerful than the president. Also it's interesting how Trumps pledge to 'punish' South Africa aligns with Musk's criticism of the country. Now Elon is shutting down USAid, who have been a significant contributor to various programs in South Africa...

I’ll be honest. I would love it if we all knew where and how the $72 billion of aid was actually being allocated and for what purpose. In addition, why does that purpose supersede the needs we have at home (homeless, disaster response, addiction support, child hunger, etc.)? I have no idea why we’re giving half a billion to South Africa in the first place. If the outcome leads to getting our own house in order then that’s great. That being said, there’s a right way and a wrong way to go about things….

It could be whole sale cost, like the whole sale cost to Ukraine for weapons. $2bills guns and ammo, sent to the war with russia. The money never leaves the u.s. It pays the manufacturers (which benefits jobs, shareholders, renewed stock and development) and is added to the tab of Ukraine long term.
Certain parts of Africa will be 'long leasing' all sorts of agricultural, geological, oil extracting, industry from the u.s.

Where there is a deal, there is a margin, if that margin is in the u.s favour, they'll leverage against mineral deposits, or fossil fuel licences... etc

But that information was already out there…at least it was before Musk took it down. There was a whole database that went into every grant.

You could almost (but not really) make an argument in this line - IF, and it's a really big IF, those funds would actually be spent on the needs you listed - homeless, disaster response, addiction support, child hunber, etc - but we all know that those funds won't be spent there. They'll be used for another tax cut / tax credit / whatever for orange-colored cronies.

It also assumes there is no benefit to the US by this foreign spending.

For example there is an obvious moral reason for not wanting a resurgence in HIV in Africa but there are also medical and financial impacts that hit the US if there is one too.
