Yeah i fully agree on the use of that word. But remove that word and add in any other slur and does the same logic apply? And on that basis where does it end?

Taking out the obvious terms, there can be a huge difference of opinion on what is and what isn't offensive.

i don't know what the song is as i haven't seen the video, but lyrics in songs and/or text by a black person tends spelt with a 'ga' at the end as opposed to a 'ger' (if not used in a derogatory sense). i can't remember the complete history of why and i'm on my work laptop but i think it's something that was used by slaves so it is prob better just to not say it.

I sort of wanted to say that but im
Hugely conscious of the awkwardness of my delivery. I initially became aware of it because of people in my life but like you I’ve sort of read and seen it explained more.

Your last point is certainty on the money though .

Think the bold is probably the best course really, although I have a slightly more nuanced position than just “no-one can ever say it under any circumstances”.

Leo di caprio in Django Unchained says the word, with the hard ‘R’ at the end, so that feels like a circumstance where no-one should accuse him of being racist for using the word.

I think in the right context, any word can be used, in principle, and not necessarily be offensive, but in practice, it’s not something anyone wants to see themselves in a video plastered all over Twitter saying.

I have a fairly simple two step guide for young white men out there who want to know when it's okay to say the N-word in songs they are singing along to:

  • Are you a white guy rapping along to Jay-Z in the privacy of your kitchen? ?
  • Are you a white guy rapping along to Jay-Z, recording yourself and planning to release that video to a potential audience of the entire world? ?

It's really not all that nuanced or complicated

Basically this, I was learning the raps to Ice T, Dre, Snoop, Marky Mark etc when I was 12 and am still word perfect to many hip hop albums.

Do I use every word on my own, hell yes.

Would I ever do it in public, hell no.

I'm not racist, I like to be able to follow the rap and rhythm of the songs I enjoy.

If tiktok was a thing when I was a kid though God knows what would be out there from myself but no doubt much of it cancellable. You grow, you learn. Kids need to be able to make mistakes without having their lives crucified.

I still rap every word to Doggystyle though, you won't take that from me haters.

I can also confirm I don't censor myself when I sing "Goldigger" in my house. Up yours woke moralists, we'll see who cancels who!

I know a lad who was in his teens and daft who sent a mad tweet. Was picked up on and subsequently got a criminal record when you hear far worse shouts at every football ground in the country.

So glad I didn’t grow up in this social media era as all the stupid stuff I’ve done and said has largely been forgotten.

If mobile phones had been around when I was in my twenty’s, my mates and virtually everyone I knew, would either be in jail or unemployed.

Happy, daft times, that thankfully, went unrecorded.

I find it offensive that you put Marky Mark in the same sentence as Dre and Snoop.
