If a squad has to be rebuilt it's really a sign of terrible foresight. We haven't had the resources to do it very often, but purchases like Stones, someone who might not regularly be in the first team for 12-18 months, is the kind of correct approach to prevent an ageing squad crippling the club. Ferguson's notably done it with the Utd defence over the past two years. Losing Neville doesn't result in a need to rebuild, just the need to buy a decent defensive midfielder (which would've been necessary even if he stayed).
Neville's definitely gone, of course. General opinion is that Heitinga may also leave. Certainly the latter will need to be replaced, as Distin will be 36 next season and Jags 31. Fellaini is such an anomaly of a player that, if he goes, we'd probably need to add two new players to adequately replace him: a striker and a midfielder. Without having any idea of the money available in the summer it's difficult to speculate as to who and what we could bring in, probably for Moyes as well.
