Undoutably he's the finest sprinter there's ever been as he seems so far ahead of his rivals (past and present). Bit surprised Dave hasn't been on here saying he must be doped to the gills.

You're still smarting from the velodrome stuff.

I understand.

Weird that your mind is so closed that you can't appreciate sports most don't usually get to watch.

This is a showcase of people at the peak of their profession. Why wouldn't this be impressive?

I find it weird that you have posted in an Olympic Thread so negatively. weird.

Weird that you admonish me for expressing my opinion.

I have observed said rarely publicised sports, decided there is a reason they should be rarely publicised (in my opinion) and now wish everyone would stop filling my ears about how great the olympics are. And this is my way of howling my outrage. I am the Matt Damon of the olympics...

The Olympics are boss.

The whole Bolt thing's a bit boring isn't it? 8 arrogant men, Bolt takes the piss on route to an easy win. Bit of a yawnfest for me.

I think he's boss and he backs his arrogance up, but greatest athlete ever?

Sorry not for me, Phelps, maybe, Jesse Owens, yes, loads of others to, but not Usain even though he is a frightening talent

Why Phelps? He may have the most medals, but I don't think he should be considered a legend. Bolt has dominated his events even more so than Phelps has. Just Phelps has access to more events to medal in (it is still a magnificent achievement to win across such a broad range of styles). In Beijing, remember, Bolt had only started running the 100 that year.

For me, there isn't a 'greatest Olympian' Too many variable and too many sports to cover. And only the 'hollywood' events get the major coverage and media attention. Nobody care about the guys who have been to 9 Olympic Games (sailing and equestrain), or the guys who shoot, old but every bit as good as their younger contemparies.

18 Gold medals spread across three olympic games. There maybe no single metric we can use to level all factors out, but that is some shout for greatest Olympian ever.

I think Carl Lewis has a better shout than him (just an example). His golds are spread out across more types of events than Phelps. Swimming certainly stacks the deck. Like I said, still a magnificent achievement, just not as dynamic as some.

Beijing alone puts him up there, 8 golds in 7 days with 7 world records, that's astonishing.

Definitely. It's not really fair as most athletes have one medal to aim for.

That said Phelps is still up there. He's actually managed to compete in multiple events but still, despite the draining effect of that, come away with a ludicrous amount of golds. Phelps probably has dominated like Bolt too, to be fair. He smashes WRs left, right and centre.

I do agree though, there isn't one greatest Olympian because there are too many events and variables. But there is a higher tier of elite, legendary Olympians and that includes both Bolt and Phelps.

Agreed RFUS. There is a *higher* tier and Bolt and Phelps are both in it. I can appreciate the swimming of Phelps. I have swam with SEALs, and they are something else in the water, and they are geared to stamina. To see someone like them, go for speed is truly world class.

And I have seen sprinters in real life. Even the high 10, low 11 second guys are just so much faster than they seem on TV.

There are many candidates, but I have to go with Lewis just for the fact that I like him more. Bolt is a laugh as well (his Top Gear interview was a blast). Phelps is a bit wooden outside of the pool (I know, using media appearances as a barometer is just daft, but it is what it is).

I feel sorry for the other athletes who live in these guys shadows. At any other time, guys like Blake would be gold medalists. But they are unfortunate enough to be competing against these completely dominant athletes.

Come on mate, it wasn't steroids like Ben Johnson. Most of the stuff he tested for is found in common cold and flu medicine.

Read the 'dirtiest race ' book or watch that bbc documentary on Seoul 88. one particular scene in the programme spoke about how the athletes taking HGH often needed braces which was really unusual in grown men , the next scene was Lewis in a tv interview 'slamming drug cheats ' wearing braces on his teeth . In the book so many athletes , including Alan wells, talk about the massive changes in Lewis physique. Don't be fooled by Lewis' media campaigns , I accept pretty much everyone was doing it but in my opinion Lewis was one of them a lot of thoughts are Calvin smith (I think that's his name) would have been the world champ in a 'clean sport'
