All I'm saying that is I want to be proud of my own achievements and the achievements of something that I choose to be a part of, that I do have control over, like supporting a football team, for example.

I choose to be part of supporting the UK's athletes just as much as I choose to support Everton. As someone born in the UK with a toffeenose dad, my choice was laid out in front of me but I still could have chosen otherwise on both counts.

When people talk about pride I'm actually proud of the the people that my country has representing it and if you like me as much as anything .I'm proud because I feel part of it, I'm far from a über right winger and for me it's the make up that I enjoy as well. Mo is a lad born in Somalia (all be it to a British dad) and he fled to this country to escape the chaos and I think it's great he represents us and seems proud to do so. Whether its lads like Tom stalker who has used sport to turn his life around , working class people like ennis & wiggins or rowers who have the same roots or the military on special leave to perform or the cyclist whose medical condition means she vomits after every race or training session or the Rower Tom James who has atrial fibrillation and had to miss training before the heats. I think whether working class or middle class the sacrifices and efforts they make frankly puts many of us to Shame and for that in my opinion they should be applauded.

I'm not saying they shouldn't. I want the British team do well. And I am happy for those who overcome adversity to do well, and they should be very proud of themselves for doing so. I just don't feel a part of it in the same way that a lot of people seem to.

Quality post that mate.

Not off you mate. But I've been getting PMs and neg rep comments such as: "go back to Russia, Stalin", and "if you dont like us Brits then go and live in Kabul, Osama Bin Whingeing".

I love sport, I really do. But if you're not on the same page as the uber-Brits your're in their crosshairs, it seems
.

Dave has nailed it here tbh.

So, and going by the thinking behind your first post, how does you supporting Everton affect how they perform on the pitch and how does it impact on any glory they achieve ?

Because I choose to be an Evertonian and not British. If Everton win something I will be proud to support the, as well as be happy for them, if Britain win something I will be happy but not proud. If I'm at a game then I will be supporting them and support obviously impacts the players.

I understand that it seems a bit arrogant to be proud of someone when it's their achievement and their effort, not yours.

But it's inherent really, to feel something for these people who've achieved so much and given even more. When these people are proud to represent your country, you can't help but feel proud of them, as a citizen of said country.

For all the things wrong with where I live, I'm just enjoying seeing some of the things right with it. I'm feeling good about being a Brit and that will no doubt be a rare and fleeting thing, that goes soon after the Paralympics end and the next fame-hungry, waste of oxygen covers the national rags once again. But right now I'm proud of some of the finer things to come from our shores, chiefly the inspirational folk donning the GB kit and representing us wonderfully on the biggest sporting stage out there.

By the way Rutherford who was getting stick for being posh & middle class as far as I can see went to a government funded academy school so hardly an etonian and his early sporting pedigree seems to be that poshest of sports namely footy whilst his grandfather and great grandfather were both arsenal footy players and is imagine they weren't getting Tevez type wages.

I didn't choose to be British, but I choose to support the British athletes. No one is forcing me to, I want to. Similar to choosing to support Everton.

And as such, when they do well, it makes me feel happy, feel proud of their achievement, that they've gone in to a competition and come out on top.

Bad Nazi me like.

I dont understand the British nationalism that has arisen from yesterday. Everyone saying they are proud to be British because they happen to be born in the same country as a successful athlete? I'm not proud because nothing I have done has any bearing on whether they win or lose.

That is your first post above, you are now contradicting yourself as you are saying that your support affects how the team plays... yet if we support an athlete you won't take any joy as it had nothing to do with you ????????

A natural black shirt and no mistake. Four months from now you'll be patrolling the ghettos of Dundee with a big stick looking for Communist sleeper cells.

This is how it all starts man.

Me physically being there supporting the team is different to me sitting in front of my TV thinking oh it would be nice to see them win
