Fair play to them as it's one incredibly tough sport. Does the equipment make much difference, like some lid has a better bike than another lid but isn't as good but he still wins?

To an extent. The difference between say a £500 bike and a £1000 is quite big, but the differences get gradually less the more you spend. At the pro level there's not a huge difference, although Sky will come out with things that they claim makes a difference, like the helmets with the air vents filled in. Won't turn a no hoper into a champ, but might make the difference between 1st and 2nd.

At the amateur level though it's mostly about your legs.

So Wiggins could ride for pretty much any other team and still be in the top five for example?

Possibly. There's a lot of team work involved in cycling as well. You save a lot of energy by riding behind other people, often as much as 30%. The Sky team at the Tour this year would have around 4 guys doing that up the mountains, with each man going as far as he could, then handing over to the next, and so on. With these guys on the front they ensured the mountains were ridden the way Wiggins wanted.

So he was certainly helped by having a really strong team. But, he was by far the strongest rider in the time trials where it's just man against man, so he'd still have been easily top 5, but his team did help him in the mountains.

Lochte looks liike he's well pissed off with losing that Backstroke. Phelps will take this IM off him too, I reckon.
