The Oldies Thread

I also remember the periodic testing of air raid sirens during the cold war 1960's.

Scary times. :(
I remember a particularly tense time in the cold war during the early 80s when I was a teen, walking down a high street and bricking myself when I heard an air raid siren. The adrenaline coursed through my veins and I knew I was much longer than 4 mins away from my family.

Then I noticed that nobody else seemed the slightest bit bothered. 20 yards further down the street I realised that what I was hearing was a masonry drill echoing around in an empty shop.

Fecking shop fitters!

Getting a bath in the day was fun. I was lucky enough to get third dunk.and it was just the once a week!
Baths revolved around the "immersion" .The purveyor of " when it's gone its gone! "
It used to make the eleccy wheel go so fast it looked still, so we were not allowed to put it on.

onto working days and often i would get in to find it had not been out on it it had been all used up , so I would have to sit and wait for it to earn up enough to get a wash.
Now ,you just turn on the tap and we have got got water 24/7. Bloody marvellous!

....clearly remember Margaret St swimming baths in Everton having a load of cubicles with baths in. Never used one myself, but they were busy. Also remember the old tin bath in front of the fire. Saturday night was usually bath night.
