I actually left school as a 14 years old, (in July 1969, the month before my 15th Birthday)

My Grandad left earlier aged 12 than that worked at Cronton Collery till he retired at 65 with a gift of a pocket watch & a OAP no private or firms pension as it was not worth while joining it at his age ......

He thought the OAP was fantastic - how correct he was- died at 74......

OAP will be a thing of the past imo in years to come......

….just got a letter to say I’m getting £500 Winter Fuel Payment. I had no idea, seems you qualify if born before 25.09.56, I got in by a few days.

I’m really am old now.

To settle disputes in beach cricket for L B W or dodgy catches the bowling side would declare " candles". The batter would have to turn his/her bat upside down and face 3 underarm bowls to decide his/her fate. Don't suppose the stuffshirts at Lords would adopt this in place of Hawkeye,but at least we tried

My missus missed out by a few days but it mattered not as its one payment per household and I already qualified.

Another facet of play on street cricket was to shout ST. This stood for save time.
It was shouted when you just about made your run to the bowling end. Shouting ST meant you could run back to the batting crease without being run out. Naturally you didn't get another run.

Aspects of beach cricket would certainly enliven the current professional game.
For instance, a dog, working for the batting side and roaming the outfield, could chase after any balls it chose, providing amusement for the spectators, especially the youngsters. The score would rattle round as fielders attempted to corner the animal and persuade it to give up its prize.

Bat first if it's going out
Bat 2nd if its coming in.
4 or 6 if you hit the water*

*not at Southport obvs - iirc it only comes in twice a year
