Never had it in my life, never any food left over in our house

…I remember an old chef telling me that soup in hotels and restaurants is often made from the previous days leftovers. I just hope by ‘leftovers’ they don’t mean ‘left on customers plates’.

I've worked in kitchens of a few Pub chains and can't recall anyone saving anything off a plate to remake meals lol, known a few Waitresses take

Still have Bubble & Squeak now, and definitely with a Fried Egg on top if there’s one left in the fridge!

I am a little bit too young to remember the 1950s but one thing on here surprised me as I had always been brought up to believe it was white bread that was cheaper and therefore eaten by the poor, not brown bread.

Brown bread was white bread dyed brown.

Reminds me of the Malta buses, up until fairly recently at least. Used to love going on them, slow, noisy, no air con and bellowed out lots of fumes but fun nonetheless!.

I just remember my mother insisting on having brown bread when we had a cheese sandwich. It tasted the same as white sliced. Same consistency as well.
